State completes $1 million commitment for Tawes Armory rehab

Posted

CRISFIELD — Delmarva Veteran Builders continues to restore the exterior of the former Maurice D. Tawes Armory with two out of the three roofs replaced.

The contract for $636,560 includes subcontractor Ri-Core Masonry cutting out and prepping the mortar joints and work is projected to be completed later this month.

Also in the scope of work are floor joists being replaced inside the building, according to city grant administrator, Jennifer Merritt. The asbestos tile flooring has already been removed.

It was the Department of Housing and Community Development that committed $1 million over four years to rehabilitate the circa 1927 building which has an historic easement with the Maryland Historical Trust.

The final $250,000 awarded this fiscal year will be used to address heating, ventilation and air-conditioning upgrades and further mold remediation.

To complete the renovation the city will need additional funding, which Ms. Merritt will seek to secure.

“The rehabilitated building will house community events, meetings, weddings and other celebrations as well as indoor sports activities,” she noted. “It is also envisioned as a space to relocate outdoor events, such as the Fourth Saturday Bay Art Stroll or Christmas in Crisfield, during inclement weather.”
