CAMBRIDGE - Dorchester Center for the Arts is pleased to offer free art programs for youth beginning in April. In the classroom, “Around Town Drawing for Teens,” a new six-week drawing class for ages 13-17, begins April 26 and runs through May 31.

Instructed by Robert Gladney, this class meets 3:30-5 p.m. Time will be spent in the studio as well as outside drawing local architecture and landscapes.

The class will support teens looking to develop a higher range of art and drawing skills as well as beginners. Various approaches to drawing will be explored using both graphite and charcoal. All materials provided. Visit dorchesterarts.org for registration, call 410-228-7782 or stop by DCA at 321 High St.

In recognition of April as National Poetry Month, DCA will host a youth poetry workshop April 29, conducted by Sami Miranda, whose art is included in the current exhibition “State of the Art.” Workshop participants learn how to interact, analyze and spark conversations about the art in the current exhibition art to create group poems based on their individual responses.

The poems are then organized into a cohesive piece which will be creatively presented as a group. The youth workshop for ages 13-17 will be held from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. This will be followed by an adult workshop for ages 18 and up, from 1:30-4 p.m.

Watch for more information on the four-week summer arts intensive for students entering 9th-12th grade. Students will start each week focusing on Maryland Arts Standard 1 and 2, experimenting with thematic materials, and looking at historical and contemporary examples for their artwork. Mid-week they will begin to add Standard 3 into their work; looking at the finishing of a piece and how to critique their work.

For the end of the week, students will focus on Standards 4-8, finalizing pieces, deciding on exhibition worthiness, creating artist statements and practicing curatorial skills. All other standards will be touched on briefly through the introduction of projects and art history. Mediums will include fiber, 3-dimensional, drawing and painting.
