CAMBRIDGE - In the galleries, “State of the Art: Highlights from the Maryland Artists Collections of the University of Maryland Global Campus” curated by Jon West-Bey, continues through April 29. Presented as a partnership with DCA, UMGC and the American Poetry Museum, this exhibition focuses on the diverse and dynamic collections of the University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) and runs through April 29.

“As a curator,” states West-Bey, who is also the founder of the American Poetry Museum in D.C., “I am passionate about showcasing the intersection of visual art and poetry. Both mediums are incredibly expressive and can evoke deep emotional responses in their viewers and readers. When visual art and poetry are combined, they can create a multi-sensory experience that can be both powerful and thought-provoking.”

In recognition of April as National Poetry Month, DCA will host youth and adult poetry workshops on Saturday, April 29, conducted by Sami Miranda, whose art is included in the exhibition. Workshop participants learn how to interact, analyze and spark conversations about the exhibited artwork to create group poems based on their individual responses. The poems are then organized into a cohesive piece which will be creatively presented as a group.

The youth workshop for ages 13-17 will be held from 10 a.m. -12:30 p.m., followed by the adult workshop for ages 18 and up, from 1:30-4 p.m.

In the classroom, Around Town Drawing for Teens, a new six-week drawing class for ages 13-17 instructed by Robert Gladney, begins Wednesday, April 19, and runs through May 24. This class meets 3:30-5 p.m. and will include both studio and outdoor drawing sessions. All materials provided. Visit dorchesterarts.org for registration, or stop by DCA at 321 High St. in Cambridge.

In the Performance Hall, Groove Theatre Company will begin its 2023 season with their production of Annie Baker’s “The Aliens,” directed by Iz Clemens. Tickets will go on sale by April 7, available at groovetheatre.com. The performances run Friday, Saturday and Sunday, April 21-30.
