Somerset County Rec & Parks gets more funding for park improvements

Posted

ANNAPOLIS — After recent approval of $1 million to Somerset County for improvements to the Westover athletic complex and other parks in Somerset County the Maryland Board of Public Works (BPW) awarded $180,000 more through Program Open Space.

The largest share of $76,500 will benefit enhancements at the Marion Recreation Area. The basketball and tennis courts will be rehabilitated to include resurfacing and restriping, plus the basketball goals and nets will be updated.

The fence will be replaced, and areas for seating will be set aside.

The BPW in October 2020 approved $99,000 for this project. Last September the County Commissioners awarded a $125,000 bid from Pruitt Resurfacing Solutions for the basketball and tennis courts.

In Mt. Vernon, funding of $58,500 will be used to construct a new basketball court and pay for the installation of a safety surface for the playground that meets National Playground and Americans with Disabilities Act standards. There also will be structural improvements to the pavilion.

Also approved during the April 27 meeting was $45,000 for Raccoon Point Park. It will pay for the installation of a fire ring, seating, landscaping and ADA approved playground equipment and other amenities.

The BPW is made up of Gov. Larry Hogan, Comptroller Peter Franchot and Treasurer Dereck Davis.
