Smyrna's Wayne Knight chooses Stony Brook

SMYRNA — Wayne Knight is headed for Stony Brook to continue his football career in college.

The Smyrna High senior running back announced his decision on social media this afternoon.

Stony Brook, located on Long Island, is in the Colonial Athletic Association with Delaware.

Knight previously said that he had scholarship offers from 11 NCAA FCA Division I schools, including Delaware, Delaware State, Maine, Long Island, Brown, Penn, Princeton, Howard, Western Illinois and Central Connecticut.

Smyrna coach Mike Judy said Knight has worked hard to put himself in this position.

“He performed at a high level,” Judy said earlier this summer. “He really turned a lot of heads — big schools, smaller schools, everywhere in between. He really spent a lot of time and effort this summer doing that and it really paid off. He’s got some really nice offers out there.

“It’s pretty exciting. I just like to see the kids having opportunities and options.”

A second-team All-Stater last fall, the 5-foot-8, 185-pound Knight and the Eagles open their season on Saturday with a 2 p.m. game at nationally-ranked Bergen Catholic, N.J.

Knight is following in the footsteps of his older brother, Will, who played at both Old Dominion and Delaware. Will Knight has posted that he’s going to continue his career at Garden City, Kan. Community College.
