Saturday's college football preview: DELAWARE STATE (1-3) AT CAMPBELL (1-3)

Posted

WHEN: Saturday, 2 p.m.
WHERE: Barker Lane Stadium (5,500), Buies Creek, N.C.
TV: FloSports (fee required).
LIVE STATS: www.DSUHornets.com.
SOCIAL MEDIA: @DSNsports on X.
COACHES: DSU — Lee Hull (2-13, 2nd season at DSU; 14-25, 4th season overall); Campbell — Braxton Harris (1-3 at Campbell, 1st season, 14-31, 5th season overall).
SERIES: Campbell leads, 1-0.
LAST MEETING: Campbell won, 34-7, in 2022.
LAST WEEK: Delaware State lost to Richmond, 38-24; Campbell lost to Stony Brook, 24-17.
QUOTE OF THE WEEK: “Defensively, man, they fly around and play fast. They wore the light-blue jerseys last week and it made it look like a swarm of light blue flying around the football field. We’re going to have our hands full this week because it’s a good football team coming to our place. ... Make no bones about it. We’re a 1-3 football team. If we overlook anybody or think that we’re better than anybody, we’re crazy. ... I don’t think anybody here at Campbell is going to be overlooking DelState. We know we’ve got our hands full.” — Campbell coach Braxton Harris.
KEYS TO THE GAME: The non-conference FCS matchup is a meeting of two teams still trying to find their way this season. The Camels have won only two of their last eight games going back to the 2023 season. Campbell has never won more than six games in a season in its 16-year modern history. This should be a game where the Hornets compete for a victory. ... DelState’s defense has to do a better job of limiting big plays. In the last two weeks, the Hornets have given up scoring plays of 61, 59, 60 and 38 yards. Whether those big plays are the result of issues with communication, personnel or scheme, DSU needs to start making its opponents drive the ball more. ... Campbell has scored only six TDs on 15 red-zone possessions this season with four FGs. The Hornets have just 13 touchdowns on 30 red-zone possessions. Whichever squad figures out a way to start taking more advantage of those opportunities could come away with the victory.
NOTES: This is the Hornets’ second-straight game against a CAA squad. The Camels lost to Delaware, 45-7, last November. ... Campbell did show what it was capable of when it knocked off then No. 17 FCS Western Carolina, 24-16, on Sept. 7. ... DSU’s Kristian Tate has a team-high 11 catches for 144 yards. NyGhee Lolley also has 11 receptions for 101 yards. ... The Hornets have intercepted five passes this fall. Wayne Favors, III has two. ... DelState is back home on Saturday when it hosts St. Francis at 1 p.m. for Homecoming.
PREDICTIONS: Andy Walter: Campbell, 24-17; Tim Mastro: Campbell, 20-10; Glenn Frazer: Campbell, 27-21.
