Roundup: Senators finally top Riders in volleyball

Dover High bounced back from a first-set loss to down Caesar Rodney, 3-1, on Thursday evening in what might have been the Senator volleyball program’s first-ever victory over the rival Riders.

The Senators won the Henlopen North match by scores of 24-26, 25-19, 25-21, 25-22. Dover was 0-14 against CR since 2007, which is the last season from which scores were available on Thursday.

Senior Kim Czepukaitis had 17 kills and three blocks for Dover (3-0) with Kendra Williams adding 12 kills and a pair of aces. Olivia Anyanwu finished with 42 assists.

Lake Forest 3, Indian River 1: The Spartans won the final two sets to post the 25-22, 18-25, 25-19, 25-21 Henlopen South victory.

It was the first time Lake Forest beat IR since 2015.

Smyrna 3, Milford 0: The Eagles earned the Henlopen North win by scores of 25-2, 25-5, 25-7.

Mia Schultz (4 kills, 5 aces), Gianna Ramano (5 kills, 3 aces) and Karalyn Osborne (3 aces, 12 assists) led Smyrna.

Sussex Central 3, Polytech 1: The Golden Knights took the last two sets to register the 25-14, 24-26, 25-12, 25-23 Henlopen North win.

Brenya Reid finished with 33 kills, four aces, two blocks and 12 digs. Katelyn Evick (4 kills, 5 aces, 9 digs) and Madelynn McTeer (6 aces, 32 assists) also led Central.

Cape Henlopen 3, Sussex Tech 0: The Vikings picked up a Henlopen North win by scores of 25-10, 25-10, 25-13 in their season opener.

Leading Cape were Rileigh Wilson (10 kills, 1 ace), Kalista Lawson (7 kills, 3 aces) and Megan Smith (3 kills, 6 aces, 26 assists).

Laurel 3, Seaford 1: The Bulldogs topped the Blue Jays in a Henlopen South contest.

Howard 3, First State Military 1: The Bulldogs fell to the Wildcats in a non-conference match.

Field hockey

Polytech 2, Smyrna 1: Kylee LaVere tallied both Panthers’ goals in the first half as Polytech held off the Eagles in a Henlopen North contest.

Milford 3, Caravel 3: Caravel scored the only fourth-quarter goal as the two Buccaneer squads played to a tie.

Carley Mackert, Erin Dunlap and Hannah Zimmerman all scored goals for Milford which got a combined seven saves from Eve Sekscinski and Melissa Mesidor. Caravel finished with advantages of 13-8 in shots and 11-7 in corners.

Cape Henlopen 12, Sussex Tech 1: The Vikings erupted for eight second-quarter goals in their Henlopen North win.

Noelle Sabbagh (3 goals, 1 assist), Alexi Nowakowski (2 goals), Reagan Ciabattoni (2 goals) were multiple goal-scorers for Cape.

Tori Adams scored for the Ravens while Bryannah Coral made 11 saves.

Delmar 11, Laurel 0: Josie Hollamon tallied three goals with Jordyn Hollamon adding a pair of goals and three assists in the Wildcats’ victory.

Maci Bradford also scored twice for Delmar, which didn’t allow a shot or corner.

Jillian Harwood and Taylor Rawlings combined to make 29 saves for the Bulldogs.

Sussex Academy 4, Woodbridge 0: The Seahawks blanked the Raiders in a Henlopen South matchup.

Boys’ soccer

Sussex Central 3, Dover 0: The Golden Knights tallied two second-half goals to put away the Henlopen North win.

Ibrahim Leyva-Fojaco made four saves for Central, which held advantages of 15-4 in shots and 5-1 in corner kicks.

The Senators’ Alex Escalante-Diaz made 12 saves.

Caesar Rodney 8, Milford 0: Tate Wisniewski and Djosonde Anathol both scored twice in the Riders’ Henlopen North win.

Six different players scored for CR, which also got a goal and two assists from Tebar Gomez. CR held advantages of 22-2 in shots and 13-1 in corner kicks.

Milford’s Fernando Flores made 11 saves.

Delmarva Christian 5, Red Lion Christian 1: Thomas Obertubbesing and Lewis Burris both scored twice for the Royals, who netted four second-half goals.

Dominic Schneck also scored for Delmarva Christian.

Cape Henlopen 4, Sussex Tech 0: Aldo Hernandez-Becerra netted three goals and an assist in the Vikings’ Henlopen North win on Wednesday.

Brandon Somoza-Lima also scored for Cape, which got a combined eight saves from Dalson Case and Dru Schneider. The Vikings finished with advantages of 9-8 in shots and 9-1 in corner kicks.

Anthony Willey had five saves for the Ravens.

Football

Caravel 42, Sussex Tech 0: The Buccaneers scored 35 first-half points before downing the Ravens (1-2) in Class 2A game on Thursday night.

College soccer

WOMEN, Iona 2, Delaware State 0: The Gaels scored just 16 seconds into the contest before blanking the Hornets.

Gabriella Cabrera and Ashley Ventura recorded shots on goal with Eriona Shabani making 10 saves for DSU.
