Roundup: Riders roll past Cavs for field hockey win

Caesar Rodney High used a three-goal second quarter to break open its 5-0 victory over Middletown in a non-conference field hockey game on Monday afternoon.

Peyton Shields and McKenna Healy both collected two goals and an assist for the Riders (3-1), who led 4-0 at halftime.

Madelyn Reed added a goal and an assist while Brogan Callahan had a pair of assists for CR. The Riders finished with advantages of 12-3 in both shots and corners.

Volleyball

Odyssey 3, Woodbridge 1: Odyssey downed the Blue Raiders in a non-conference match.

Boys’ soccer

Conrad 9, First State Military 1: The Bulldogs managed only one first-half goal in the Diamond Conference loss.

College volleyball

Delaware State 3, Norfolk State 0: The Hornets set a new school record with their 10th straight win on Sunday, topping Norfolk State 3-0 in a MEAC match at Echols Hall. The scores were 25-17, 25-9 and 25-19.

The previous team record of nine wins in a row was held by the Hornets’ 1986 MEAC championship club.

DSU’s record now stands at 14-1, the best mark after 15 matches in team history. The Hornets have won by 3-0 scores eight times and won 30 of 32 sets during the win streak.

Delaware State is also 2-0 to begin MEAC play for the first time since the 2010 season. DSU has 10 shutout wins and is 43-7 in sets played this year.

In Sunday’s match, Alondra Maldonado led all players with a career-high 18 kills on 27 attacks. Maldonado also contributed six digs and three blocks.

Newcomer Karen Cordero was second on the Hornets with 12 kills on 21 attempts, while also tallying five digs and two aces.

Dover grad Doyle honored: Dover High grad Danielle Doyle, a sophomore middle blocker on the Arcadia volleyball team, was named MAC Freedom Defensive Player of the Week.

Doyle tallied nine blocks in 12 sets as the Knights went 4-0 on the week. The middle blocker collected a career-high six blocks vs. FDU-Florham, including two solos. Doyle also had three blocks vs. Lycoming.

On the season, Doyle has 54 kills and 15 blocks.

College field hockey

Delaware 3, Temple 1: The No. 23 Blue Hens (3-6) snapped a five-game losing streak with the road win on Sunday.

In the second minute of the game, Kiki Oudshoorn netted her third goal of the season. She received a pass from Morgan Rigual on the ride side of the scoring circle and got a quick shot off to hit the back of the net stick side high.

With the game tied, Julia Duffhuis answered back with under five minutes remaining in the contest. She scored on a corner from the top of the scoring circle with assists from Femke Strien and Grace Miller.

Duffhuis leads the squad with five goals and 11 points.

With 2:28 left on the clock, Ashlyn Carr (Delmar slapped in the rebound from a corner attempt to secure the win for the Blue Hens. It was Carr’s first goal of the season and her eighth overall point, which stands second on the team.

College soccer

MEN, UNCW 4, Delaware 2: Carlos Fernandez and Einar Hardarson each registered a goal and an assist but it wasn’t enough as the Blue Hens dropped the CAA game on Saturday night.

Scott Sampson made seven saves for Delaware, including a penalty kick late in the first half. UNCW held a 21-12 shot advantage and a 13-4 edge in corner kicks.

Hardarson was named the Colonial Athletic Association Men’s Soccer Rookie of the Week on Monday.

WOMEN, Delaware 2, Northeastern 1: The Blue Hens picked up the win on Sunday night as Anna Diffendal scored her second goal of the season.

In the second half, Delaware (1-0 CAA, 4-6 overall) capitalized on a penalty kick by Sara D’Appolonia, who scored her third goal of the season, sending the ball high and in.

Bryant 3, Delaware State 0: Coming off their first win of the season, the Hornets (1-8) came up short.

Jada Lee led the Hornets’ offensive attack with two shots on a goal while goalkeeper Eriona Shabani tallied two saves.

College cross country

Sussex Central sets DSU mark: A record-setting performance by Sussex Central High grad Albert Norman led Delaware State to a first-place finish at The Shore XC Invite this weekend.

Norman, a freshman competing in his first race of the season, was first among 42 runners to cross the finish line with a modern-day Delaware State record time of 25-minutes-57 seconds in the 8K race.

Norman’s time was nearly 18 seconds ahead of teammate and runner-up Devin Smith, who posted a time of 26:15.4 to give DSU the top two finishers in the race.

The DSU women’s cross country team placed fourth out of seven teams at the meet.
