Roundup: Riders down Vikings to wrap up Henlopen North title

Caesar Rodney High netted the game’s first four goals before posting a 5-3 victory over Cape Henlopen in Henlopen North boys’ soccer on Tuesday night.

The win clinched the North title for the unbeaten Riders (6-0 North, 13-0-1 overall), who close the regular season next Thursday with a North contest against Polytech.

CR will face Henlopen South champion Indian River in the Henlopen Conference championship game on Nov. 6 at Sussex Academy at 4 p.m.

Freshman Trevor Sullivan tallied two of the Riders’ first four goals. Daniel Gomez, Thaddeus Glasser and Ethan Reid also scored for CR.

Reid’s goal came in the 74th minute after the Vikings had closed within 4-2. The Riders held advantages of 10-5 in shots and 6-3 in corner kicks.

Cape’s goals came from Tiarnan Hefferan, Trent Kauffman and Evan Burris.

Indian River 2, Sussex Academy 0: Jose Savala-Saldivar scored in the first half while Jordan Illian scored in the second as the Indians improved to 5-0 in the Henlopen South.

Reece Stone made five saves for IR, which held advantages of 16-7 in shots and 7-1 in corner kicks.

Tyler Hudson had 10 saves for the Seahawks.

Sussex Central 2, Polytech 1: The Golden Knights edged the Panthers in a Henlopen North contest in which all three goals were scored in the second half.

Field hockey

Cape Henlopen 7, Caesar Rodney 0: Mackinzie Brown tallied three goals for the Vikings, who improved to 5-0 in the Henlopen North.

Samantha Conners (1 assist), Molly Mendes and Carrie Clausius also scored goals for Cape.

Bailey Minear made 27 saves for the Riders.

Sussex Tech 3, Dover 2: The Ravens edged the Senators to improve to 4-3 in the North, 10-4 overall.

Karli Penrod, Tori Adams and Journey Hopkins all scored for Sussex Tech, which led 3-1 in the fourth quarter. The Ravens out-shot Dover, 11-5, with Bryannah Coral making seven saves.

The Senators got goals from Jewels Goldman and Superia Clark.

Polytech 3, Sussex Central 0: The Panthers raised their record to 8-5-1 with their second straight win. It was their fifth shutout of the season.

Sussex Academy 6, Indian River 1: The Seahawks downed the Indians in a Henlopen South matchup.

St. Peter & Paul 14, Delmarva Christian 1: The Royals managed only one goal in the setback.

Volleyball

Sussex Central 3, Caesar Rodney 2: The Golden Knights won the final three sets to rally for the 22-25, 23-25, 25-20, 25-22, 15-12 Henlopen North victory.

Brenya Reid (5 aces, 13 digs) was credited with 50 kills for Central, which was also paced by Katlynn McTeer (53 assists, 7 digs, 2 aces), Makenna Messina (26 digs) and Katelyn Evick (7 kills, 11 digs).

For the Riders, Alexandra Mardesich (4 aces, 14 digs) had 20 kills while Melissa Eddy (8 digs) added 19. Lindsey Shuba and Gabrielle Davis had 23 assists apiece while Makenna Diem (3 aces) added 15 digs.

Dover 3, Milford 0: The Senators finished 7-0 in the Henlopen North with the 25-8, 25-10, 25-12 victory.

Dover will face South champion Lake Forest in the Henlopen Conference championship match. The match will be played on Saturday at Woodbridge at noon.

Leading Dover on Tuesday were Kim Czepukaitis (8 kills, 13 aces), Olivia Anyanwu (20 assists, 2 kills, 2 aces) and Elizabeth Baughman (3 kills, 4 aces, 8 digs).

Lake Forest 3, Sussex Academy 0: The Spartans stayed unbeaten in the Henlopen South with the 25-17, 25-22, 27-25 victory.

Cape Henlopen 3, Polytech 1: The Vikings won the final two sets in picking up the 25-23, 22-25, 25-15, 25-20 Henlopen North victory.

Cape was led by Rileigh Wilson (15 kills), Laurelee Mobius (9 kills), Hope Reed (8 kills, 1 ace), Megan Smith (4 aces, 17 digs, 35 assists) and Harlee Graulich (4 aces, 20 digs).

Indian River 3, Seaford 0: The Indians downed the Blue Jays, 25-6, 25-12, 25-19, in a South matchup.

IR was led by Nicole Norman (3 kills, 7 aces, 7 assists) and Scarlett Dunn (2 kills, 7 aces).

College golf

UD men win tourney: The Delaware men’s golf team won the team title while Roberto Nieves placed second among individuals as the Blue Hens wrapped up their fall season at the ODU/OBX Intercollegiate.

After firing identical 278 scores during the first two rounds, Delaware carded a 283 on Tuesday to finish with a 13 under par score of 839 and place first out of 17 squads. That score is the second lowest three-round total in program history.

The Hens have also won multiple invitationals for the first time since the 2010-11 season.

College volleyball

Howard 3, Delaware State 0: The Hornets’ school-record 16-match winning streak came to an end with the 25-20, 25-18, 25-23 MEAC loss.

For DSU (20-2 overall), it was the first loss since a 3-1 setback at St. Francis on Sept. 4.

The Hornets’ 16-match winning streak was the third longest among all NCAA teams this season, trailing only Louisville (20) and Texas (17). The Bison won their fourth straight match to improve to 10-11 overall and 7-2 in the MEAC.

Alondra Maldonado was tops on the Hornets with a match-high nine kills, while Valeria Otero tallied eight.

DSU’s Malgorzata Andersohn led all players with 23 assists. Jasmal Cruz was tops on the Hornets with nine digs.
