Roundup: Indian River pulls away to win over Panthers


Indian River High netted six unanswered goals in the second half to register a 7-1 victory at Polytech in boys’ soccer on Monday afternoon.

Jordan Illian scored three goals for IR (1-0-1), which also got goals from Sergio Parada Basurto, Cole Veirs, Dominic Delaney and Parker Steele. The Indians held advantages of 15-6 in shots and 6-3 in corner kicks.

Kade Seip gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute.

Caesar Rodney 8, Woodbridge 0: Thaddeus Glasser, Djosonde Anathol and Tebar Gomez each scored twice as the Riders (1-0-1) earned their first win of the season.

Tate Wisniewski (2 assists) and Lucas Quiroga also scored goals for CR, which finished with advantages of 21-3 in shots and 6-1 in corner kicks.

Delmar 5, Holly Grove Christian, Md. 1: Mason Ball tallied three of the Wildcats’ goals in the win.

Joe Brown and Damian Kunie also scored for Delmar in a contest that was tied 1-1 at halftime. The Wildcats held advantages of 30-9 in shots and 11-3 in corner kicks.


Dover 3, Queen Anne’s, Md. 0: The Senators earned the non-conference victory by scores of 25-16, 25-11, 25-12.

Leading Dover were Kimberly Czepukaitis (10 kills), Olivia Czepukaitis (7 kills, 5 aces, 4 digs), Kendra Williams (8 kills, 1 ace) and Olivia Anyanwu (5 aces, 36 assists).

Delmar 3, Holly Grove Christian, Md. 1: The Wildcats won the first two sets before picking up a 25-13, 25-22, 18-25, 25-21 win.

College football

Smyrna’s Will Knight scores twice: Former Smyrna High football standout scored a pair of touchdowns in his debut with Garden City, Kan. Community College on Saturday.

The running back, who played at both Delaware and Old Dominion, transferred to Garden City last month.

Knight ran for 35 yards on seven carries and caught a 13-yard pass as Garden City tied the school scoring record in a 76-24 win over Fort Scott.

DSU’s Wilkerson earns MEAC honor: Delaware State running back Sy’Veon Wilkerson has been named MEAC Rookie of the Week for the second week in a row.

Wilkerson picked up the top rookie honor after rushing for a game-high 98 yards, including an 11-yard touchdown run, in Saturday’s 20-14 overtime loss to Georgetown. He currently leads the MEAC with 190 rushing yards, a 95.0 yard per game average and four rushing touchdowns through two weeks of the season.

College volleyball

Hornets’ Maldonado honored: Delaware State middle blocker Alondra Maldonado has been selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Volleyball Player of the Week.

Maldonado was named Most Valuable Player of the Sienna Tournament this past weekend after hitting .333. Th sophomore had double-digit kills in four of five matches, including 11 each against Manhattan and Saint Francis, and she had eight blocks against Saint Francis and four against Siena.

Maldonado is currently third in the MEAC in hitting percentage (.356) and kills (3.38 per set), while ranking fourth in blocks (0.97 per set) entering this week.

College golf

DelState sets mark: Delaware State’s women’s golf team posted a school-record combined score of 294 at the William & Mary Invitational on Sunday.

The Hornets’ previous one-day team record score was 304. Overall, Delaware State is tied for eighth with a score of 601 after two rounds of the tourney.

College soccer

WOMEN, Delaware 1, Loyola 0: Damali Simon-Ponte’s goal in overtime gave the Blue Hens the victory on Sunday.

Goalkeeper Lauren Krinsky recorded three saves as Delaware improved to 3-5.
