Roundup: DSU volleyball team sweeps Binghamton

The Delaware State volleyball team completed a home-and-home weekend sweep of Binghamton with 3-0 victory in Memorial Hall on Sunday.

The Hornets’ eighth straight win came by scores of 25-14, 25-18 and 25-16. DSU defeated the Bearcats 3-1 on Friday in Binghamton, N.Y.

Kristi Gomez topped all players with 10 kills and five aces to lead the Hornets. Alondra Maldonado added nine kills and Valerio Otero eight.

Gomez was second in the MEAC and tied for fifth among all NCAA Division I players in aces entering this weekend’s matches (0.55 per set).

Delaware State is tops in the MEAC with a 12-1 overall record this season, the team’s best start after 13 matches since the program began in 1985. The eight straight wins also rank second in team history. The MEAC champion 1986 DSU team holds the school record with nine consecutive wins.

James Madison 3, Delaware 2: The Blue Hens (5-6 overall) went five sets with the Dukes before falling to JMU on Sunday for the second time in two days.

Three Hens recorded double-digit kills led by Lani Mason’s 18. The junior hit .317 and posted a double-double, adding 10 digs to her stat line against the Dukes (8-2). Savannah Seemans notched 12 kills to pair with 14 digs, while Grace Underwood hit a team-best .562 en route to tallying 10 kills.

College soccer

WOMEN, Princeton 4, Delaware 0: The Blue Hens were blanked by the No. 22 Tigers on Sunday.

Princeton out-shot Delaware, 16-8, as the Hens fell to 3-6.

Boys’ soccer

Holly Grove Christian, Md. 2, Delmarva Christian 0: Holly Grove scored twice in the second half before downing the Royals.

Volleyball

Caesar Rodney 3, Appoquinimink 1: The Riders overcame a first-set loss to win the match by scores of 24-26, 25-13, 25-18, 25-22.
