Roundup: Bradford helps Hens to CAA win

Delmar High grad Morgan Bradford tallied her first collegiate goal in No. 20 Delaware’s 3-1 win over William & Mary in CAA field hockey on Sunday.

The victory clinches a spot in the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament for the Blue Hens (4-1 CAA, 8-7 overall).

In the third minute of the game junior Morgan Rigual got the Hens on the board early, chipping in a goal on a pass from Femke Strien.

Two minutes later, Julia Duffhuis scored on a corner, with assists from Strien and Grace Miller, to give Delaware a two-goal lead in the first quarter. Duffhuis now has 11 goals on the season, good for 23 points.

After halftime, Bradford, a freshman, scored on a pass from Strien from five yards out on the left side of the goal, giving Delaware a 3-0 lead. Strien tallied three assists.

Delaware out-shot the Tribe 20-6, taking 13 shots on goal. Delaware had a 10-8 edge in penalty corners.

College volleyball

Delaware State 3, Coppin State 0: The Hornets’ school-record win streak is now at 16 matches in a row with the win on Sunday.

The Hornets (8-0 MEAC, 20-1 overall) won by scores of 25-14, 25-21, 25-20, to reach 20 wins in a season for the first time in 12 years.

The team record for wins in a season is 23 set in 1987 (23-6). During their 16-match winning streak, the Hornets have won 48 of 50 sets.

Delaware State’s 20 wins this season are the most since posting a 20-13 mark in 2009. The team record for wins in a season is 23 in 1987 (23-6).

Hornet freshman middle blocker Kelsie Dawson had career-highs of seven kills and seven blocks, while outside hitter Karen Cordero led all players with 11 kills and three aces. Alayna Lacy came off the bench to lead all players with 16 assists, while Jasmal Cruz was tops on the Hornets with 11 digs.

Cordero was named MEAC Co-Player of the Week after posting a combined .363 hitting percentage in two DSU wins, averaging 4.5 kills per set. Despite missing the first 12 matches of the season, Cordero is sixth on the Hornets with 72 kills for a team-high 3.42 per set.

Northeastern 3, Delaware 0: The Huskies downed the Blue Hens, 21-25, 20-25, 23-25, to snap Delaware’s four-match winning streak.

The Hens (9-10, 4-6 CAA) got a match-high 14 kills from Lani Mason to go with five digs. Savannah Seemans followed with 11 kills, 10 digs and two aces to register her fourth double-double of the season.

College soccer

WOMEN, Delaware 1, Drexel 1: The Blue Hens (1-2-2 CAA, 4-8-2 overall) and Dragons played to the tie in a CAA game on Sunday.

Delaware’s Laura Fluegge scored the first goal of the match from 30 yards out when Sydni Wright passed it back to Fluegge, who sent the long strike into the net. But Drexel tied the contest with a minute and a half left in regulation.

Lauren Krinsky made nine saves for the Hens, who were out-shot, 22-9.

MEN, Charleston 4, Delaware 3, OT: Charleston’s Nick Burnz scored on a header just 1:19 into the first overtime session as the Cougars rallied from three goals down to stun the Blue Hens on Saturday night.

Delaware scored three goals in the first 37 minutes. The Hens held a 16-9 shot advantage.

College cross country

DSU men take second: The Delaware State men’s cross country team placed second while the Hornet men were third in their own invitational on Friday.

The Hornets were led by Devin Smith who finished second overall with a final time of 27:54.0. Delaware State had five runners finish in the top-10. Dover High grad Nathaniel Guy was ninth (30:16.1.

For the DSU women, Jaelyn Windham finished seventh with a time of 21:32.5.

Boys’ soccer

Woodbridge 8, First State Military 0: The Raiders tallied six first-half goals in the non-conference victory.
