Roundup: Milford edges Dover for fourth straight win

Milford High scored on a penalty kick late in the game to edge Dover, 1-0, in Henlopen North boys’ soccer on Tuesday evening.

It was the fourth straight victory for the defending conference champion Buccaneers (3-1 North, 5-3 overall) after losing three of their first four contests.

The Senators are 2-2 in the North, 4-4-1 overall after having a three-game unbeaten streak snapped.

Caesar Rodney 3, Smyrna 0: Freshman Trevor Sullivan netted a goal in each half for the undefeated Riders (8-0-1).

Ethan Reid scored CR’s first goal with Ethan Stant adding a pair of assists. Kaden Childs made two saves for the Riders, who held advantages of 25-4 in shots and 12-1 in corner kicks.

The Eagles’ Alex Valle Roman made 18 saves.

Cape Henlopen 3, Polytech 0: Nicholas Panyko netted the Vikings’ first and last goals in their North win.

Aldo Hernandez-Becerra scored n a penalty kick with Dalson Case making three saves. Cape finished with advantages of 8-3 in shots and 4-2 in penalty kicks.

The Panthers’ Stefan Williamson made five saves.

Indian River 8, Delmarva Christian 1: Jordan Illian netted three goals and three assists in the Indians’ non-conference win on Monday.

Dominic Delaney added a pair of goals while Reece Stone made three saves.

Gavin Catron had a second-half goal for the Royals.

Field hockey

Cape Henlopen 4, Polytech 1: The Vikings overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit to remain unbeaten.

Reagan Ciabattoni (1 assist) tallied Cape’s first and last goals with Mackinzie Brown and Noelle Sabbagh scoring the others. Samantha Connors had two assists.

Amiyah Sizer scored in the first half for the Panthers.

Milford 6, Dover 3: The Buccaneers tallied the final three goals of the contest to snap a four-game losing streak.

Beau Davis and Erin Dunlap both scored twice with Lila Mergner (1 assist) and Madisyn Hitchens scoring the others. Eve Sekscinski made five saves as Milford finished with edges of 12-9 in shots and 15-8 in corners.

Joslin Cain had two of the Senators’ goals with Alayna Gigliotti scoring the other.

Delmar 7, Sussex Academy 0: Josie Hollamon tallied three goals as the Wildcats raised their record to 8-0.

Maci Bradford scored twice for the Wildcats, who didn’t allow a shot or a corner.

Lilly McAroy made 14 saves for the Seahawks.

Caravel 4, Indian River 2: Samantha Derickson and Brynn McCabe scored for the Indians in the non-conference setback.

Caylee Schmidt made 14 saves for IR, which was out-shot 25-6.

Seaford 3, Delmarva Christian 0: The Blue Jays tallied all three of their goals in the second half as they earned their first win on Monday.

Cyonna Knowles, Elyssa Bivens and Lydia Thomas all scored for Seaford with Madelyn Breitenbach making four saves. Seaford out-shot the Royals, 9-4.

Elizabeth Moyer made six saves for Delmarva Christian.

Volleyball

Delmarva Christian 3, Sussex Central 0: The Royals made it seven wins in a row with the 25-22, 25-23, 25-19 victory.

The last four of those wins for Delmarva Christian (7-2) have been over Henlopen Conference squads.

Leading the Royals were Sierra Troyer (16 kills, 16 digs), Elaina Millaway (9 kills, 8 aces, 16 digs), Rachel Fetterman (18 digs) and Tessa Kwiatkowski (20 assists).

The Golden Knights (6-2) were paced by Brenya Reid (24 kills, 12 digs), Katelyn Evick (8 kills, 13 digs), Madelynn McTeer (29 assists) and Makenna Messina (16 digs).

Caravel 3, Smyrna 2: The Buccaneers won the last two sets to out-duel the Eagles, 25-15, 16-25, 22-25, 25-16, 15-10, in a non-conference match.

Cape Henlopen 3, Conrad 0: The Vikings improved to 4-3 with the 25-18, 25-21, 25-23, non-conference victory.

Rileigh Wilson (13 kills, 5 aces, 3 blocks), Laurelee Mobius (8 kills), Harlee Graulich (13 digs) and Megan Smith (31 assists).

Howard 3, Woodbridge 0: The Wildcats topped the Blue Raiders in a non-conference match.

College basketball

Hornets set men’s slate: Delaware State has released its men’s basketball schedule for the 2021-22 season, the first under new coach Stan Waterman.

The Hornets are scheduled to play 14 home games in Memorial Hall and 14 on the road this upcoming regular season.

DSU will open the new season with three straight home games, beginning Nov. 6 against Virginia Lynchburg and followed by Cairn and Salisbury. The Hornets will play their first road game on Nov. 14 at Rider before returning home for the next two contests, against Regent on Nov. 16 and UNC-Wilmington on Nov. 20.

Delaware will visit Delaware State on Dec. 2 in a battle between the state’s two Division I men’s basketball programs.

The Hornets will play one other non-conference home game on Dec. 11 against St. Francis Brooklyn before tipping of their Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference schedule in Jan.

College field hockey

Hens’ Duffhuis honored: Delaware sophomore back Julia Duffhuis was named CAA Player of the Week in field hockey.

Duffhuis led the Blue Hens to a 2-0 week. She recorded six points on three goals, scoring in both matches over the weekend.

Duffuis leads Delaware with 17 points on eight goals and one assist this season. She is also is tied for the CAA lead in goals and ranks second in the league in points.
