United Way of Delaware, in partnership with State Representative Lyndon Yearick and First State Community Action Agency, will host two free Federal and State Tax preparation events in Rep. Yearick’s 34th Representative District near Dover.
The two tax preparation events will be held from 2-8 p.m. on Feb. 13 at Camden-Wyoming Fire Company and from 2-8 p.m. on March 24 at Wyoming United Methodist Church
At each event, attendees can complete their taxes with expert support or can provide their documents and have their taxes prepared by a tax expert. In either case, the Federal and State tax returns will be completed at the event. Laptops and printers will be provided for attendees to use.
The tax preparation support is limited to basic tax returns for individuals earning less than $67,000 in 2024 and is only for personal, not business, taxes. Attendees must register in advance, and each event will be open to up to 40 attendees. Register via Delaware 211 by calling 2-1-1 on a mobile phone and selecting Option 6, or text zip code to 898-211. Registration opens on Jan. 31.
"Paying taxes can be stressful, especially when you have to pay someone to help meet that obligation," said Rep. Yearick, R-Magnolia. "I’m grateful to all the partners involved in this collaborative effort to provide free tax preparation assistance to working families already burdened by the financial strain of a harsh winter."
Bernice Edwards, executive director of First State Community Action Agency, said, “For low-income families, the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is a true lifeline, offering a critical financial infusion that keeps families housed, warm, and fed. However, navigating the tax system is complex. Access to quality, affordable tax preparation services is the key to ensuring these families claim the benefits they've earned.”
Dr. Michelle A. Taylor, President and CEO of United Way of Delaware, commented, “We are excited to collaborate with State Representative Yearick and the First State Community Action Agency to deliver essential services to families in Kent County. Given how crucial the EITC is for many families, it's vital they receive this support quickly. This event will assist up to 80 families in accessing that credit without delay.”
In addition to tax preparation, Stand By Me financial coaches will offer one-on-one financial coaching, First State Community Action Agency will provide community services counseling, and Delaware 211 will be available to connect attendees with other resources.
