There is something truly great about pastries, and goodness knows that European bakers have perfected the art.
Stepping into the Bavarian Bakery & Deli is always a treat in Dover, Del. Right there on the highway is a flavor portal to old world baking: breads, cakes, pastries and sandwiches made every day by a first-generation German family and their team.
Every time I open the bakery door, facing the wide pastry case and massive wall of bread, I feel myself transported into a beloved Christmas memory of my own.
Presents are nice, but I’ve long decided that my favorite part of Christmas morning is everyone sitting around the tree and snacking on hors d’oeuvres, usually charcuterie and spinach dip.
Several years ago, I was gearing up for a Christmas visit to my boyfriend. He had been sick, and Boxing Day was the first morning we could get together. On a whim, I swung by my local bakery and grabbed about six different pastries for our breakfast.
I still remember the delight of throwing open the front door, wrapping him in a big hug and then proudly presenting the bakery box of sweets. We sat together on the couch, bright sunlight pouring into the room as we shared bites of fresh pastry. Chocolate. Berry. Cream cheese. All of it a delight.
Many special moments in life are marked by shared meals. Think of weddings, birthday dinners, slices of pizza after school or at the boardwalk. Those moments add up.
I know many people like to cook a nice breakfast on holiday mornings—it’s a labor of love. And for me, I also look forward to picking out professionally made baked goods each year. Whether it’s Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day or just a Tuesday, a beautifully crafted sweet just makes everyone’s day.
Glazed danishes? Cinnamon twists? Tall frosted cakes?
Probably one of each, with good memories to follow.
Bavarian Bakery also does custom orders for special occasions. This is in addition to their sandwich/wrap menu, convenient for a shopping day or midweek lunch. Try the roast beef with provolone and horseradish; chicken club with gouda cheese, bacon and chipotle mayo; or pastrami with Swiss cheese, coleslaw and Bavarian rye. There’s also ham, turkey, chicken salad, tuna salad, a classic Reuben and more.
Bavarian Bakery & Deli is located at 1819 S. DuPont Highway, Dover, Del. Learn more at (302) 744-8598 and www.yourfavoritebakery.com.
