DOVER — Delaware’s COVID-19 vaccine incentive program, DE Wins!, is entering its final week as the state inches closer to meeting President Joe Biden’s initial goal of 70% of adults vaccinated by July 4.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 69.3% of Delawareans 18 years old and older have received at least one dose of the vaccine. This figure includes Delawareans vaccinated out of state and at sites such as Veterans Affairs offices and Dover Air Force Base who do not report their numbers to the Delaware Division of Public Health.

Twelve total winners will be drawn next week as part of DE Wins!. Prizes offered include tickets to the Grand in Wilmington, Delaware State Fair VIP tickets, Wawa catering, tuition to Delaware State University, a scholarship to Wilmington University for both graduate and undergraduates, state park passes and $5,000 to four winners.

The grand prize drawings for $302,000 and two low-digit license plates will take place on Wednesday. Any Delawarean vaccinated at any time by Tuesday in Delaware is eligible. For a list a vaccination sites, visit here.

Among Delawareans ages 12 and up, 501,422 have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and 432,948 Delawareans are fully vaccinated, according to the DPH’s vaccine tracker as of Thursday at 11:59 p.m.

There have been 397 breakthrough cases of COVID-19 among those fully vaccinated, less than one-tenth of 1%. The DPH said a “breakthrough case is defined as testing positive for COVID-19 after an individual has been fully vaccinated for two weeks or more — although it does not mean that the infection actually occurred after vaccination.”

Nineteen of the reported breakthrough cases involved hospitalizations while five individuals died, although it is unknown at this point if COVID-19 was the cause of death in these five cases.

Two more cases of the delta COVID-19 variant were found this week through routine surveillance of test specimens, bringing Delaware’s total to 13. The delta variant was recently classified as a Variant of Concern by the CDC.

Nine different variants have been confirmed in Delaware, for an aggregate case total of 1,094 adults ranging in age from 18 to 98 years old, as well as 239 individuals under the age of 18. A total of 1,002 individuals were from New Castle County, 176 were from Kent County and 155 were from Sussex County.

The DPH lab has sequenced 3,189 specimens for COVID-19 variant strains to date, including 62 within the past week.

A total of 1,693 Delawareans have passed away due to complications from COVID-19, according to the DPH. Thirteen deaths were reported in the last week, but 12 were from a review of Vital Statistics records.

The total number of individuals who have died from COVID-19 range in age from younger than 5 to 104 years old. Of those who have died, 847 were female and 846 were male while 845 individuals were from New Castle County, 349 were from Kent County and 499 were from Sussex County.

Delaware has recorded 109,636 positive cases of COVID-19 all-time, including 17 new positives in Friday’s update. There are 23 individuals hospitalized with the virus, six of which are considered critical..
