Polka DOT program to help homeless Cape Henlopen students

Posted

LEWES — At any given time, there are more than 100 homeless students attending school in the Cape Henlopen School District. These youth often move from place to place staying with relatives, sleeping on couches or floors, sometimes living in motels. The constant upheaval means they often do not have many of the necessities of daily life.

The Lewes Chapter of the Polka DOT Powerhouses is collecting personal hygiene products to help these students with day to day life.

From Nov. 1 through Dec. 1, the Dots are taking donations of travel sized shampoo, conditioner, mouthwash, soap and body wash. In addition they are also collecting deodorant, and sanitary feminine products to donate to the district’s homeless youth.

Dropoff spots for these items are: The Wheelhouse, 7 Anglers Road, Lewes; Provident State Bank, 18467 Coastal Highway, Lewes; and Jeanine O’Donnell State Farm Insurance, 16583 Coastal Highway., Lewes.

The hygiene product drive is part of the Dots annual charity Dream Drive, as part of the Dots’ year-long push to learn more about and help the homeless of our area.

For more information on the Dream Drive and how you can help the homeless students of the area, contact Nilima Palekar at dashofspices@gmail.com, or go here to learn more.
