GEORGETOWN - Investigation is ongoing after a Sussex Central High student was found in possession of a firearm on school property Wednesday, Delaware State Police said.

The student is currently in custody, spokeswoman India Sturgis said. No students or staff were harmed, she said.

More information would be provided publicly as it becomes available, Sgt. Sturgis said.

The Indian River School District sent a message to families at around 12:50 p.m. regarding the incident. The message said a school resource officer responded after a report from other students and the armed student was taken into custody.

The firearm was confiscated, the message said.

The school day was to proceed as normal following the incident, the message said.

The school district indicated that it takes safety seriously and it appreciated the swift action of staff and safety personnel.

The incident was at least the fifth firearm-related incident at a Delaware school this year. Others included:

• Feb. 6 at Appoquinimink High School, Middletown. Four arrests resulted following a firearm discharge during a large fight in a hallway as a boys’ basketball game was ongoing, police said. The males arrested were ages 20, 16, 15, and 14. None attended Appoquinimink High, Delaware State Police said.

No injuries occurred, authorities said.

• Feb. 2 at Alexis I. du Pont Middle School, Greenville. State police said a student was found to have a handgun in his backpack. The 14-year-old was arrested on three felonies — possession of a firearm by a person under 21, carrying a concealed firearm and possession of a weapon in a safe school zone. He was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 11, released on unsecured bond and turned over to a relative.

• Feb. 2 at Evan G. Shortlidge Academy, Wilmington. Wilmington police said that officers responded to the 100 block of West 18th Street after a school constable located an unloaded firearm in an 8-year-old male student’s backpack. There were no injuries during this incident, which is under investigation by members of the Criminal Investigations Division.

• Jan. 10 at William Penn High School, New Castle. State police investigated a reported shot fired at the school, but there were no injuries. A 16-year-old male from Wilmington was later arrested and charged with first-degree reckless endangering, among other offenses.
