FELTON — A 42-year-old Felton man was arrested after he allegedly shot at a neighbor early Monday, Delaware State Police spokeswoman Master Cpl. Heather Pepper said.

Authorities said Eugene K. Sykes allegedly produced a firearm for unknown reasons and discharged a live round, narrowly missing a female sitting with him on the outside deck of her residence. Police said the incident occurred at approximately 1:26 a.m. on Indian Runner Road.

Police said Mr. Sykes was visiting the home and had shown a male resident a .38 caliber revolver he had recently acquired. The resident had allowed Mr. Sykes to fire the weapon at a target on the property before they sat down together with the female resident, authorities said.

After the firearm discharge, the male resident immediately took the revolver from Mr. Sykes, emptied the ammunition, and threw the weapon into the yard, police said. Mr. Sykes then engaged in a physical altercation with the male resident, Cpl. Pepper said.

During the fight, the male resident suffered minor injuries, police said. Mr. Sykes was transported to an area hospital for his injuries, where he was treated and released.

Mr. Sykes was charged with possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, first-degree reckless endangering, aggravated menacing, and offensive touching. He was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 2 and released after posting a $72,100 secured bond.
