Heroin seizure in QAC
On Feb. 21 at approximately 1:16 p.m., troopers at the Maryland State Police Centreville Barrack received a 911 transfer describing an erratic driver who had reportedly struck an unknown area of the Bay Bridge and possibly some median dividers along US-50 while traveling eastbound through the Kent Island area. The caller described a gold GMC Sierra as the suspect vehicle and stayed behind the vehicle as troopers responded to the area to intercept.
The caller stated that the vehicle continued onto US-50 eastbound from the intersection of US-301 and US-50. Centreville troopers located the vehicle in the area of MD-213 and US-50.
TFC Mulhearn followed the vehicle making observations and initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle shortly after it turned onto MD-404 eastbound. The vehicle stopped at the intersection of Dulin Road. After contacting the occupants, TFC Mulhearn determined the driver, identified as a 37-year-old Denton man, appeared under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.
TFC Mulhearn conducted standardized field sobriety tests on the driver and placed him under arrest for driving under the influence. Meanwhile, TPR Maranto made contact with the front passenger and upon detecting the odor of marijuana in the vehicle, asked him to exit.
As the passenger, identified as a 41-year-old Greensboro man, exited the vehicle, TPR Maranto observed a clear plastic baggie sticking out of his jacket pocket. The baggie appeared to be containing clear capsules.
The man was then placed under arrest for possession of a controlled dangerous substance. A further search of the vehicle and occupants revealed two additional capsules in the center console. In the glove compartment, .22 caliber rifle rounds and a 20 gauge shotgun slug round were located. The MSP Gun Center confirmed that the driver was prohibited from possessing firearm ammunition.
Both suspects and the evidence were transported to the Centreville Barrack for processing. While conducting a secondary search of the suspects, a second bag containing capsules was located concealed on Johnson’s person. A total of 95 capsules of heroin were confiscated.
Douglas Butler was charged with DUI, Illegal Possession of Ammunition, and Possession of Controlled Dangerous Substance and paraphernalia.
Heber Johnson was charged with Possession of Controlled Dangerous Substance, paraphernalia, and Possession with Intent to Distribute.

Reward offered in shooting of toddler
Maryland State Police continue to investigate a shooting earlier this month that injured a three-year-old boy in Somerset County. Last week, Metro Crime Stoppers of the Lower Eastern Shore offered a reward of up to $1,000 for information and tips related to the incident.
The 3-year-old victim was transported from the scene by ambulance to Tidal Health Peninsula Regional for treatment of injuries sustained in the shooting. The victim has since been released from the hospital.
Shortly after 8:30 a.m. Feb. 15, troopers from the Criminal Enforcement Division Lower Shore Region responded to a home in the 30000 block of Bardwell Drive in Princess Anne in reference to a shooting that injured a young boy. Upon their arrival to the residence, the victim and his father were being placed into an ambulance.
According to a preliminary investigation, the child was struck by a gunshot that appears to have entered the victim’s bedroom from outside of the home. The exterior of the home where the bullet entered faces east toward Route 13.
It is unclear at this time whether the gunshot came from someone inside a vehicle. There were three adults in the home at the time of the incident. There were no other injuries reported.
Troopers on scene, along with officers from the Princess Anne Police Department and deputies from the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office conducted a thorough search while securing the area. They conducted neighborhood checks and interviewed several witnesses. Personnel from the Maryland State Police Crime Scene Unit also responded to collect evidence and process the scene.

Rollover and entrapment
At 5:55 a.m. on Feb. 23, Dorchester Central dispatched Rescue Fire Company units for a motor vehicle collision with rollover and entrapment on Horns Point Road. Asst. Chief 31 arrived to find one vehicle off the road on its roof.
When the car left the road, it had struck and severed a utility pole. Chief 1 arrived, assumed command and requested Delmarva Power Priority for hazardous conditions on scene, with power lines down across the vehicle.
Rescue 1-1, Rescue Engine 1-1, Engine 1-3, and Rescue Engine 31-1 staged to await Delmarva Power to secure the power. Once the power lines were secure, crews used the Hurst tool to extricate one patient. The patient refused treatment from Dorchester Emergency Medical Services Paramedic 100.
At approx. 7:14 a.m., with the situation under control, command was terminated and all units were placed in service without incident.
Mutual aid at the site was provided by Rescue Engine 31-1 (Neck District), Rescue Engine 46-1 (Church Creek).

Neck District VFC tower in service
“Feb. 24 was the day that a lot of us have been waiting for,” a statement from Neck District VFC said last week. “The tower is on!”
Members of the fire company and others in the Neck District worked for years to have a tower placed in use at the fire company, allowing better general and emergency phone and radio communications.
“I would like to give a huge shout out to all of the members that have put in countless hours of time to make this possible for all of us,” the statement said. “Especially NDVFC President Mike McKinley.”

Firearms and CDS
On Feb. 25, Easton Police Department officers arrested,a 28-year-old from Cambridge. An officer conducted a traffic stop for a speeding violation on Ocean Gateway in the area of Dutchman’s Lane, and upon making contact with the occupants of the vehicle, detected the odor of marijuana from within the passenger compartment.
A probable cause search of the vehicle, specifically the trunk, resulted in the seizure of a .40 caliber semi-automatic firearm, two loaded magazines containing 24 rounds of ammunition, three individual bags of marijuana and a digital scale. The man was determined to be the owner of said paraphernalia, and was arrested.
Patrick O’Neal Bostic was ultimately charged with Possession of Marijuana (over 10 grams), Possession of CDS with Intent to Distribute, Firearm Use During the Commission of a Felony, and Possession of a Firearm While in Commission of a Drug Trafficking Crime. Bostic was transported to the Talbot County Detention Center, where he was left in their custody.

CDS and handgun
On Feb. 6, deputies from the Talbot County Sheriff’s Office stopped a motor vehicle on Ocean Gateway near Rabbit Hill Road for a traffic violation. Deputies identified the driver as a 23-year-old Cambridge man and developed probable cause to search the vehicle.
During the search, deputies located marijuana, paraphernalia and a loaded handgun within reach of the driver. Malik Elbert was placed under arrest and charged with possession of a handgun, illegal transport of a handgun in a vehicle, possession of marijuana and paraphernalia.
Elbert was taken to the Talbot County Central Booking facility for processing and his initial appearance before a District Court Commissioner. Elbert was ordered held pending further action by the court.

Cocaine and heroin
On Feb. 13, Deputies from the Talbot County Sheriff’s Office stopped a motor vehicle on Glebe Road near Commerce Drive for a moving violation. Deputies identified the driver as a 32-year-old of Wittman woman and a passenger as a 34-year-old Bozman man.
Deputies developed probable cause and conducted a K-9 scan of the vehicle resulting in a positive alert for the presence of a controlled substance. As the passenger was exiting the vehicle, he dropped paraphernalia in the presence of the deputy and attempted to flee on foot.
He was quickly apprehended and a search resulted in locating cocaine, heroin and paraphernalia. A further search of the vehicle revealed additional amounts of cocaine and heroin.
Kaila Kathryn Gowe and Lonnie Robert Joyner were placed under arrest and charged with possession of controlled substances and paraphernalia. Gowe and Joyner were transported to the Talbot County Central Booking facility for processing and an initial appearance before a District Court Commissioner. Gowe and Joyner were held pending further action by the court.

Warrant Arrest
On Feb. 25, deputies from the Talbot County Sheriff’s Office arrested a 26-year-old Hurlock man. An arrest warrant was issued by the Talbot County Circuit Court for failure to obey court ordered condition of probation on the original charge of robbery.
Michael Jamal Brown was taken to the Talbot County Central Booking facility for processing and an initial appearance before a District Court Commissioner. He was ordered held at the Talbot County Detention Center on no bond.
