WESTOVER — The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved boosters for the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson (J&J) COVID-19 vaccines. Starting Nov. 3, the Somerset County Health Department offers Moderna, Johnson & Johnson, and Pfizer boosters as well as continuing to offer 1st, 2nd, and additional doses.

For individuals receiving a booster dose, proof of vaccination is required.

The Pfizer and Moderna boosters must be given at least 6 months after the initial series. Other eligibility requirements include:

  • People aged 65 years and older.
  • People aged 18-64 years who are at high risk of severe COVID-19 illness.
  • People aged 18-64 years living or working in certain settings where COVID-19 risk is higher.

The Johnson & Johnson booster must be given at least 2 months after initial J&J dose. Other eligibility requirements include:

  • People aged 18 years and older.

The FDA has also approved “mix and match” COVID-19 boosters. This means that a single dose of any of the available COVID-19 vaccines (Pfizer, Moderna, and J&J) may be given as a booster dose 2 months after a J&J vaccination and 6 months after a 2nd Pfizer or Moderna vaccination.
