One dead in Smyrna-area crash

SMYRNA - A 43-year-old Townsend man died in a single-vehicle collision on Friday morning, Delaware State Police spokesperson Senior Cpl. Leonard DeMalto.

The man, Charles Cassidy Jr.,  was driving northbound on Dupont Parkway south of Smyrna Landing road when his vehicle left the roadway for unknown reasons at approximately 8:53 a.m., authorities said.

The car continued northbound off the road for a short distance until it struck a set of trees, where it spun and came to rest.

The victim was wearing a seatbelt, police said. He was pronounced deceased at the scene. Identification of the victim is pending notification to his family and relatives.

No other vehicles were involved in this incident, and no other injuries were reported, police said.

Dupont Parkway was closed for approximately three hours while the collision was being investigated and cleared.
