SMYRNA — One person died in a single-vehicle crash Monday on South DuPont Boulevard, Delaware State Police Senior Cpl. Jason Hatchell said.

Police said that, at approximately 12:17 a.m., a 2010 Toyota Prius was traveling north on the highway, approaching Smyrna Leipsic Road, when it exited the road and struck a mailbox. The car then struck a concrete median separating the north and south lanes, and crossed the north lanes before again exiting South DuPont Boulevard off the right shoulder, where the front of the vehicle struck a brick pillar and a concrete post.

After the collision, the Prius rotated through the grass until its right rear impacted a large tree, police said. The car then caught fire in the engine area, and it quickly spread to the interior. The operator was pronounced dead at the scene, and his identification is pending results of the medical examiner’s investigation.

U.S. 13 north was closed for approximately three hours, while the crash was investigated and cleared.

The Troop 3 Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate and asked any witnesses to contact Master Cpl. Booth at 302-698-8451, send a message via the state police Facebook page or contact Delaware Crime Stoppers at 800-847-3333.
