Delaware state retirees to be part of talks about health benefits

Posted

Gov. John Carney has signed legislation into effect that increases pensioners’ say in the state’s development of retirement benefits.

Formerly known as Senate Bill 29, the law expands the State Employee Benefits Committee’s membership to include a state retiree. It also creates a subcommittee of lawmakers and retirees responsible for public outreach regarding the consideration of health benefits.

The legislation was sponsored by every member of Democratic and Republican leadership in the General Assembly.

An amendment successfully placed with the act requires each member of the State Employee Benefits Committee to attend every meeting without a designee. Prior to the law’s enactment, members could appoint someone from their staff to attend meetings on their behalf.
