CLAYTON — Richard C. Lawson III, a 33-year-old from New Castle, was arrested by Delaware State Police for attempted murder and related charges Friday night, said police spokesperson Master Cpl. Heather Pepper.

Troopers responded to a residence in the 3900 block of Wheatleys Pond Road for a shooting incident on Friday at around 9:48 p.m.

Master Cpl. Pepper said that when troopers arrived, they contacted a 33-year-old female victim, who had an apparent gunshot wound to her face.

An investigation determined the victim was driving on Wheatleys Pond Road in her vehicle with Mr. Lawson when an argument ensued and escalated into a physical altercation before the suspect allegedly pulled out a handgun and shot the victim.

After being shot, the woman went for help at a nearby residence. Troopers arrived and found Mr. Lawson on foot in the 4700 block of Wheatleys Pond Road.

He was taken into custody and transported to Delaware State Police Troop 3 in Camden, where he was charged with attempted first-degree murder (felony), possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a person prohibited (felony).

Mr. Lawson was committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in Wilmington on a $100,000 cash bond.
The victim was taken to a nearby hospital and admitted in stable condition.

This case remains under investigation by Delaware State Police Criminal Investigative Unit. Anyone with information regarding this incident should contact Det. Shawn Ryan by calling 302-697-4454.
