NEW CASTLE - September is Library Card Sign-up Month, a time when New Castle County Libraries join the American Library Association to remind parents, caregivers, and students that signing up for a library card is the first step on the path to academic achievement and lifelong learning, a news release said.

“Libraries play a crucial role in the education and development of children,” said New Castle County Executive Matt Meyer.

“Offering a variety of programs to spark creativity and stimulate an interest in reading and learning. A library card gives students the tools to succeed in the classroom and provides people of all ages opportunities to pursue their dreams, explore new passions and interests, and find their voice.”

Visitors to any New Castle County library can attend a library program, check out an item, use a computer, or renew or sign up for a library card and be entered to win a $25 gift card. Each branch will select a weekly raffle winner.

The gift cards have been provided with the support of the Friends of the Library.

“Library Card Sign-Up Month is an opportunity for the community to come back to the library and check out all the amazing programs and services our libraries offer for free,” said Geri Krolin-Taylor, president of the Friends of the Hockessin Library.

Lee Jarmon, president of the Friends of the Del. 9 Library and Innovation Center, said “Libraries have something for everyone. Each library’s Friends group is excited to support this campaign.”

Library cards are free to all New Castle County residents. To sign up visit a library or go online to lib.de.us/librarycard.
