NAMI Delaware unveils conference workshop slate

NEWARK — The “Inspiring Hope” Conference, hosted by National Alliance on Mental Illness Delaware, will be Oct. 5 at the University of Delaware’s Clayton Conference Center, 100 David Hollowell Drive.

Attendees can register by Oct. 4 at namidelaware.org/conference or upon arrival the day of.

The program will include a series of workshops, running three at a time, and two keynote speakers.

The workshops’ topics include:

  • Strategies for preventing African American youth suicide in Sussex County.
  • The 988 lifeline — a year in review and a chat with program partners.
  • Improving mental health literacy.
  • A primer on lethal violence protection orders, aka “red flag laws.”
  • Federal legislative priorities and engaging state and federal officials.
  • Co-occurring mental health disorders.
  • Mental health concerns for communities of people of color.
  • NAMI staff members dispelling myths and sharing personal stories.

Keynote speakers Michael Jann and Michele Jourdan will share their animated short film, “Bug Therapy,” which uses humor to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness.

Other speakers will include the producers of the film and the podcast series, “Our Turn to Talk.”
