Millsboro man charged with vehicular assault

REHOBOTH BEACH — A 46-year-old Millsboro man was charged with vehicular assault and other traffic related offenses after he struck a bicyclist Saturday and left the scene.

According to authorities, the incident occurred around 4:50 p.m. when a 20-year-old Rehoboth woman was riding her bicycle on the westbound shoulder of Rehoboth Beach Ext. (Del. A) when it was struck by a 2015 Jeep Wrangler driven by Derek M. White. The woman was then thrown from her bicycle, police said.

The bicyclist was treated on scene by EMS and then transported to Christiana Medical Center with serious injuries.

Mr. White was charged with first-degree vehicular assault, leaving the scene of a collision resulting in injury, driving while suspended or revoked, failure to have insurance identification in possession, driving a vehicle under the influence of drug, failed to remain within a single lane, failure to report a collision resulting in injury or death. He was arraigned at Justice of the Peace Court 3 and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on $3,500 cash bond.
