MILLSBORO - Charles Smith, 54, of Millsboro, was arrested for a 10th-offense DUI following a crash investigation Thursday morning, Delaware State Police said.

Police said Smith attempted to flee the scene on foot after a Dodge Ram he was driving struck a fence on Main Street south of Daisey Road at approximately 11:09 a.m. He was walking south of the collision when located by troopers, authorities said.

Police said troopers immediately detected an odor of alcoholic beverages when contacting Smith and a DUI investigation ensued. He was found to have been arrested for nine prior DUI offenses, spokesman Senior Cpl. Leonard DeMalto said.

Smith was charged with driving a vehicle under the influence of alcohol, leaving the scene of a property collision accident, driving while suspended or revoked, failure to provide information at a collision scene, failure to have insurance identification in possession, failed to remain within a single lane, and failure to report a collision to police.

Following arraignment in Justice of the Peace Court 2, Smith was committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on $15,500 cash bond.
