Milford veteran invited to National Memorial Day Concert

Posted

MILFORD — Korean War veteran Charles Garrod has been invited to this year’s National Memorial Day Concert in Washington, D.C., on Sunday.

The concert will be hosted by actors Joe Mantegna and Gary Sinise, featuring performances by country music singer Trace Adkins, gospel singer Yolanda Adams, the National Symphony Orchestra and more.

The gathering will take place on the South Lawn of the U.S. Capitol at 8 p.m., broadcast live by PBS and streamed at pbs.org.

2023 marks the 70th anniversary of the armistice that ended the Korean War, and the show will pay tribute to the more than 36,000 Americans who died in the conflict.

Mr. Garrod has worked for years to bring greater attention to what is sometimes referred to as the “Forgotten War.” In 2020, he was honored at a Dover Flag Day event for his campaign to have as many governors as possible issue proclamations to commemorate the then-70th anniversary of the start of the Korean War.

He has been emphasizing that time is running out for younger generations to learn directly from Korean War veterans about their experiences, as many are in their late 80s and 90s. He said at the Flag Day ceremony three years ago that veterans of the conflict are becoming the “forgotten veterans.”
