MILFORD — Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred Saturday morning in Milford, said police spokesperson Master Cpl. Heather Pepper.

At around 11:30 a.m., a 2015 Chrysler 200 driven by a 53-year-old Milford man was traveling northbound on Coastal Highway, approaching the Del. 1 Business off-ramp within the Milford town limits.

Master Cpl. Pepper said that for unknown reasons, the driver failed to maintain control and the vehicle swerved to the right and exited the east edge of the roadway.

After leaving the road, it overran a barbed wire fence before the front center of the car impacted a tree. After impact, the car came to rest beside the tree and became fully engulfed in flames.

The driver suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Identification is pending notification of next of kin.

The right lane of Coastal Highway was closed for around three hours while the scene was processed and cleared.

This collision remains under investigation by the Delaware State Police Troop 7 Collision Reconstruction Unit. Anyone with information regarding the crash is asked to contact Sgt. Nicholas DeMalto by calling 302-644-5020.

Information may also be provided by calling Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333 or via the internet at http://www.delaware.crimestoppersweb.com.
