Milford Central Academy student faces assault charge

MILFORD — An alleged incident in a Milford Central Academy girls’ bathroom on Nov. 22 left one student injured and another facing a felony assault charge, authorities said Monday.

A 13-year-old girl suffered several injuries in what Milford police described as a “physical altercation” with a 14-year-old girl. An update on the injuries was not available on Monday, spokesman Sgt. Robert Masten said.

Police said Milford Central Academy’s school administration immediately notified the school resource officer after learning of the alleged incident. After investigation, police determined that a second-degree assault charge was warranted based on the injuries involved, Sgt. Masten said.

A possible motive for the alleged assault was still under investigation, he said.

It was unclear whether other students were in the vicinity when the alleged assault occurred.

“The investigation is ongoing and those details are still being explored,” Sgt. Masten said.

According to Sgt. Masten, a warrant is on file for the 14-year-old girl and “arrangements are being made with the parent ... to take care of that.” A court date in Kent County Family Court would be set thereafter, he said.

Sgt. Masten said incidents involving assaults or anything involving an injury “are extremely rare.” Milford police provide SROs at Milford High and Milford Central Academy, and another officer covers district elementary schools. Constables are also in place throughout the district for additional coverage, he said.
