Michael " Sherm" Porter State Senate District 7

Posted

Candidate Name: Michael " Sherm" Porter

Party: Republican

Age: 50

Hometown: Westminster, Wilmington DE 19808

Political experience: This is the first time running for political office

Professional experience: 24+ year Business owner. NC County Chamber of Commerce Board Member, Delaware Association for the Education of young children Board member.

What uniquely qualifies you for this office?

I surround myself with great people to create solutions. Delaware legislators have forgotten about the people that they serve. I have been in the service business for 24 years. I have demonstrated the ability to get things done in a fiscally responsible way. I will use these same tools in the role.

What are the top three issues for this office in your view?

Education, safety, and bringing our community back together.

What would be your top priority if elected?

Creating a plan to elevate our educational system that will help build great skills that aid our youth in the next stage of their lives.  We need to do better to prepare them to be productive and successful members of Delaware.

If you could change one state policy or law, what would it be?

Not answered

What can Delaware do about its workforce issues?

When need to focus on creating a solution to our education situation.  When we can provide better results for our students, they will have better opportunities in the future.   More businesses will want to come to Delaware.  By focusing on the education pipeline, we will become more attractive to businesses.  As we become more attractive, we will increase revenue across the board.

What, if any, gun laws would you change?

I think we need to enforce the laws we currently have and support the law enforcement community with respect, support and education. When we work together as a community, we will be safer.

How would protect or change abortion rights in the state?

I plan to govern for the people as I’m one vote representing many. I plan to provide guidance based on my constituents not my personal feelings.

Do you support the State Employee Benefits Committee’s move to Medicare Advantage Plan for state retirees? Why?

I do not. The state had several years to come up with a plan to correct the situation.  This decision was horrible for the State retirees.  Because its adding costs to them and possibly removes services.
