Local roundup: Woodbridge rallies to defeat Cape Henlopen 35-21

Woodbridge High reeled off 27 fourth-quarter points to rally for a 35-21 victory over Cape Henlopen in football on Friday night.

The Blue Raiders, who were making their debut under coach Marvin Dooley, out-scored the Vikings, 27-7, in the final 12 minutes after trailing 14-8.

Kenny Newton scored four touchdowns, including three in the fourth quarter for Woodbridge. He returned an interception 40 yards for a TD before following with a 42-yard scoring run.

Colin Hastings also caught a 58-yard scoring pass from Seth Smart to start the fourth quarter before Newton’s two-point conversion run gave Woodbridge the lead for good.

The Vikings (0-2) got a one-yard scoring run from quarterback Hank D’Ambrogi and an 85-yard kickoff return for a touchdown from Jordan Baines.

Lake Forest 33, Mt. Pleasant 0: The Spartans opened the season with a shutout victory in a matchup of Class 2A squads.
The two squads were playing for the first time since 2014.

Laurel 35, Brandywine 18: Class 1A Laurel improved to 2-0 with its second win over a Class 2A squad in the ‘Battle for the Bone.’

The game was scoreless at halftime. Javier White scored a pair of TDs while Tate Walls returned an interception for a TD.

A.I. DuPont 18, Polytech 0: In a game played Thursday night, the Tigers scored 12 second-quarter points before earning the victory.

The loss was the 15th in a row for the Panthers (0-1), who are playing in Class 1A this fall. A.I. DuPont (1-1) is in Class 2A.

Field hockey

Smyrna 5, Padua 1: Ryla Wilber tallied a hat trick for the Eagles in the non-conference victory.

Polytech 3, St. Georges 0: Megan Popp scored a goal in each half to pace the Panthers to the season-opening win.

Kylee LaVere had Polytech’s first goal with Rachel Carey adding a pair of assists.

Dover 1, Caravel 1: Superia Clark tallied a first-quarter goal on an assist from Alayna Gigliotti as the Senators opened the season with a tie.

Dover out-shot the Buccaneers, 26-15.

Sussex Central 3, Appoquinimink 1: The Golden Knights picked up a non-conference victory.

Boys’ soccer

Sussex Academy 2, Milford 1: Aleksander Danilenko netted back-to-back goals in the the 76th and 78th minute as the Seahawks rallied for the win.

Brandon Zelaya Hernandez gave Milford a 1-0 lead in the 48th minute.

Cape Henlopen 1, Delmar 0: Somozo Lima’s goal in overtime lifted the Vikings to the win.

Cape finished with advantages of 13-2 in shots and 8-3 in corner kicks as Dalson Case made a pair of saves.

Seaford 2, Mt. Pleasant 1: The Blue Jays scored in overtime to earn the non-conference win.

Laurel 2, Holly Grove Christian, Md. 0: The Bulldogs got goals from Mike Gonzalez- Perez and Darel Perez-Ortiz in the victory.

Laurel goalie Damin Smith made five saves.

Caravel 6, Polytech 1: Alexander Szell made six saves for the Panthers in the loss.

Smyrna 3, Archmere 1: The Eagles knocked off the Auks by scores of 25-21, 25-20, 19-25, 25-19.

Leading Smyrna were Anna Richardson (17 kills, 11 digs), Elise Carter (9 kills, 3 blocks) and Karalyn Osborne (3 kills, 5 aces, 6 digs, 25 assists).

Caesar Rodney 3, St. Georges 0: The Riders registered the victory by scores of 25-19, 25-8, 25-14.

CR was paced by Alexandra Mardesich (4 kills, 13 aces, 7 digs), Melissa Eddy (12 kills), Kaitlyn Hand (15 digs) and Gabrielle Davis (13 assists).

Sussex Central 3, Sussex Academy 0: The Golden Knights picked up the victory by scores of 25-10, 25-13, 25-12.

Brenya Reid collected 21 kills and 10 aces for Central Madelynn McTeer had 16 assists.

The Seahawks got five kills from Morgan Green, 10 digs from Alodie Elliott and 12 assists from Terri Kirschner.

Woodbridge 3, First State Military 2: The match went five setts before he Blue Raiders posted a 25-21, 17-25, 19-25, 25-21, 15-11 victory.
