Local roundup: Wesley sweeps Keystone 2-1, 15-2 in softball doubleheader

Winning pitcher Dori Loukopoulos doubled home the go-ahead run in the opener as Wesley College swept Keystone, 2-1 and 15-2, in softball on Friday afternoon.

Loukopoulos’ double scored Ariana Mirenda (2-for-3) to break a 1-1 tie in the fourth inning. In the circle, Loukopoulos went the distance, scattering nine hits while striking out four.

Rachel Martinez knocked in Wesley’s first run.

The Wolverines (2-4) broke open a 1-1 game in the nightcap with six runs in the second and five runs in the third. Kylie Nagle (3-for-4, 5 RBI), Juliana Ceron (3-for-4, 3 runs, 2 RBI), Mirenda (3-for-4, 3 RBI, 2 runs) and Kaitlyn Delaney (3 RBI) all paced Wesley’s 15-hit attack.

Winning pitcher Sharyn Burch struck out seven in four innings.

Basketball

WOMEN, Delaware 77, Fordham 49: The Blue Hens ran past the Rams to give the program its first WNIT victory in the first round of the 32-team tourney at Charlotte, N.C.’s Bojangles Coliseum.

Delaware (22-4), which had been 0-8 all-time in the WNIT, next faces Clemson in the second round today at 5 p.m.

“We have to make sure we are sending a message on how hard we’re going to play,” UD coach Natasha Adair told her players on a video posted by the school on social media. “We are going to out-work them for 40 minutes — or 40-plus minutes, whatever it takes. All action. No words today, all action.”

Junior guard Jasmine Dickey bounced back from a rough shooting night in the CAA finals to net a game-high 22 points — including 18 in the first half alone. She shot 10-of-19 for the game with nine rebounds, four steals and two assists.

Four players scored in double figures for the Hens, who led by as many as 33 points in the fourth quarter.

Also for Delaware, junior forward Ty Battle poured in 14 points to go with eight boards and a block, senior forward Lizzie Oleary collected 11 points, eight rebounds and three steals, while junior point guard Paris McBride posted 10 points, four assists and three steals.

The Hens limited Fordham (12-5) to only 36.5 percent shooting (19-of-52) from the floor and 12.5 percent (3-of-24) from beyond the arc. Delaware forced the Rams into 22 turnovers, including 15 steals, which the Hens converted into 24 points.

Field hockey

Delaware 4, Towson 0: The Blue Hens tallied three first-half goals in winning their CAA opener.

Twin sisters Sarah and Ashley Iannuzzi along with Grace Hoepfner and Morgan Rigual all scored goals for Delaware (1-1), which out-shot the Tigers, 17-5.

Volleyball

Coppin State 3, Delaware State 1: The Eagles beat the Hornets for the second night in a row, winning the MEAC North match by scores of 19-25, 25-18, 25-22, 25-14.

DelState (3-3 MEAC, 7-4 overall) got 11 kills apiece from Mayah Ngundam and Valeria Otero. Jasmal Cruz had 18 digs and Jelena Dukic added 25 assists.

West Virginia 3, Delaware 1: The Blue Hens won the first game before dropping the match 24-26, 25-20, 25-12, 25-21 to the Mountaineers to fall to 2-6.

Freshman Savannah Seemans had 13 kills and 15 digs for Delaware, Lily Rogers had 19 assists and Katie Turner added 17 digs.
