Local roundup: Sussex Tech edges Lake Forest 33-30

Jaryn Sample rushed for three touchdowns to lead Sussex Tech to a 33-30 homecoming victory over Lake Forest in a Class 2A, District III contest on Friday night.

It was the first loss of the season for Lake Forest (3-1) while the Ravens snapped a two-game losing streak to move to 2-3 overall.

Zion Roach added a rushing touchdown for Sussex Tech. Lake Forest received touchdown rushes from four different players — Kai Rivera, Calif Spencer, Jonathan Tyndall and Ayden Young.

Delmar 41, Woodbridge 14: Jalen Johnson led the Wildcats to the Class 2A, District III victory with three touchdowns.

The Wildcats won their second game in a row to improve to 2-2 while Woodbridge fell to 1-3.

Indian River 21, Seaford 20: The Indians won at Seaford to deal the Blue Jays their first of the year in a Class 1A showdown.

It is the fifth year in a row Indian River (2-2) has beaten the Blue Jays (4-1).

Laurel 50, Polytech 6: The Bulldogs broke the 40-point barrier for the third game in a row and improved to 4-0 in a Class 1A matchup.

Red Lion Christian 39, Milford 0: The Buccaneers were shut out Friday as they dropped their third consecutive game to fall to 2-3.

Boys’ soccer

Dover 3, Polytech 1: The Senators used three second-half goals to earn the Henlopen North win on Thursday.

Abram Leal (1 assist), Rolando Betancourt-Mejia and Uriel Lopez-Diaz scored for Dover while Alex Escalante-Diaz made six saves. The Senators held advantages of 12-5 in shots and 5-0 in corner kicks.

Bradley Mummert scored for the Panthers while James Watterton made 12 saves.

Lake Forest 2, Woodbridge 1: The Spartans led 1-0 at halftime before posting the South victory.

Indian River 5, Delmar 0: Five different players scored goals in the Indians’ South win on Thursday.

Leondardo Chester, Caleb Galbreath (1 assist), Brian Cordoba-Ortega, Connor Bird and Evan Peterson all had goals for IR, which out-shot the Wildcats, 22-12.

Field hockey

Sts. Peter & Paul School 7, Delmarva Christian 0: The Royals dropped to 1-4 with the loss.

Girls’ volleyball

Polytech 3, Milford 0: The Panthers picked up a 25-8, 25-19, 25-8 Henlopen North win on Thursday.

Women’s field hockey

Delaware 2, Drexel 1: Julia Duffhuis and Berber Bakermans tallied scores as Delaware picked up its first CAA victory on Friday.

Lizzie Gaebel picked up her second win of the season with five saves. It’s the fifth time this season Gaebel collected at least five saves in a game.

College soccer

WOMEN, Delaware 3, Elon 0: Three different players scored goals in the Blue Hens’ CAA win on Thursday night.

Odaliana Gomez made five saves as Delaware improved to 1-2 CAA, 2-7-3 overall.

College bowling

Two Hornets honored by MEAC: Delaware State junior Saralyne Nassberg and sophomore Sydney Reardon were named to the All-Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Preseason team in bowling.

Reardon, the reigning MEAC Rookie of the Year, and Nassberg, a one-time MEAC Bowler of the Week, were both named to the National Ten Pin Coaches Association All-Region team last year.

As a team, the Hornets were predicted to finish third in the MEAC, receiving one first-place vote.

College equestrian

DSU wins three awards: Three Delaware State equestrian riders have been honored by the Eastern College Athletic Conference for their  performances last week.

Megan Windborne was selected as ECAC Fences Rider of the Week after earning Most Outstanding Performer honors in a victory against South Carolina. She was also a winner against Minnesota Crookston.

Kersten Zehner has been honored with a ECAC’s weekly Horsemanship award. Zehner was selected as Horsemanship MOP with a score of 78 in the Hornets’ win over Minnesota Crookston, and posted a win against No. 10 South Carolina.

Aidan Stetzer earned Delaware State’s lone Reining point vs. No. 10 South Carolina. She was also MOP in the event with a score of 78 against Minnesota Crookston.
