Local roundup: Sussex Tech downs Lake Forest, Cape Henlopen girls fall to Caravel

Sussex Tech High took control in the third quarter before posting a 65-44 victory over Lake Forest in girls’ basketball on Tuesday night.

The Ravens led by only four points before out-scoring the Spartans, 21-9, in the third quarter. The contest was the season opener for both squads.

Justice Smack, who hit three three-pointers, netted a game-high 17 points for Sussex Tech. Maleyah Bell and Daijah Bailey both had 11.

Breanna Johnson tallied a team-high 14 points for Lake Forest.

Caravel 51, Cape Henlopen 30: In a game that was tied 20-20 at halftime, the defending state champion Buccaneers out-scored the Vikings, 31-10, in the second half to pull away.

Cape Henlopen, which was playing its season opener, got 12 points from Faith Re on four three-pointers. Hayden Hudson added 10 rebounds and four steals.

Early College 60, Salisbury School, Md. 49: The Hornets opedned up a 48-28 lead after three quarters before picking up the victory.

Delmarva Christian 67, Gunston, Md. 27: The Royals improved to 2-0 with the win.

Laurel 55, Holly Grove Christian 25: The Bulldogs evened their record at 1-1 with the victory.

Boys’ basketball

Milford 65, Saint Mark’s 55: The Buccaneers built a 10-point lead going into the fourth quarter before earning he win on Saturday.

College football

DSU’s Granger going pro: Delaware State defensive back J.D. Granger announced on Tuesday that he’s passing up his final season of eligibility to enter his name in the NFL draft.

A Caravel Academy grad, Granger was nemd third-team All-MEAC for the second straight season this fall when he had six pass breakups.

College volleyball

Hens’ Mason honored: Delaware volleyball senior outside hitter Lani Mason was tabbed as an American Volleyball Coaches Association East All-Region selection.

Mason is the eighth Blue Hen in program history to earn a spot on the all-region team and the first one to be recognized since the 2019 season when former teammate Maria Bellinger received the nod.

This season, Mason is sixth in the nation with 5.10 kills per set. She closed out the campaign averaging 5.54 points per set (career-best 604 points), 5.03 kills p/set (career-best 548 kills) and 2.83 digs p/set (career-best 308 digs) in 109 sets played.

College tennis

DSU’s Zinchenko earns honor: Delaware State women’s tennis coach Pavel Zinchenko has been named the USTA Delaware District’s College Coach of the Year Award. He has led Delaware State to MEAC Tournament appearances in each of his two seasons with the Hornets.

Zinchenko and the other USTA Delaware District award winners will be honored during the association’s annual ceremony on Feb. 26 at the DuPont Country Club in Wilmington.
