Local roundup: Sussex Central downs Caravel; DelState men win third in a row

Sussex Central High collected four pins before topping Caravel, 43-27, in a non-conference wrestling showdown on Monday night.

The Golden Knights improved to 17-0 overall while the two-time defending Division II state champion Buccaneers fell to 2-2.

Sussex Central won eight of the 14 individual bouts, getting pins from Malachi Stratton (113 pounds), Evan Cordrey (126), Talan Savage (138) and Jayden Drummond (150).

Football

Dover’s Knapp, Laurel’s Jones honored: Dover High’s Chip Knapp and Laurel’s Joey Jones were named the state Coach of the Year ins Class 3A and 1A at the DIFCA All-State banquet on Monday night.

It was the second year in a row that Knapp won the award in his two seasons with the Senators. Dover finished 8-5 and reached the Class 3A state finals for the first time since 2001 last fall.

Jones’ Laurel squad captured its second-straight Class 1A state crown. The Bulldogs finished the season unbeaten at 13-0.

College basketball

MEN, Delaware State 71, Coppin State 66: The Hornets overcame a one-point halftime deficit to post their third straight MEAC victory on Monday night.

Martaz Robinson finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds for DSU while Khyroe Staten (13), Cameron Stitt (10) and Brandon Stone (10) all scored in double figures.

DelState (3-16 overall) led by as many as nine points at 65-56 after rallying from a nine-point deficit.

WOMEN, Delaware 74, William & Mary 72: Klarke Sconiers sank a pair of fouls shots to give the Blue Hens the lead for good at 73-72 as Delaware pulled out the CAA win on Sunday.

Sconiers finished with 18 points after hitting 7-of-9 shots from the floor. She scored 12 in the fourth quarter alone.

Kharis Idom added 15 points and five assists, while Jewel Smalls had 11 points and nine rebounds.

College football

DiMeco joins UD staff: Delaware Football head coach Ryan Carty has announced the addition of Rocco DiMeco to his staff.

DiMeco will coach linebackers as well as assist with the special teams units.

DiMeco comes to UD after spending the 2022 season as the special teams coordinator and linebackers coach at Long Island University. He held the same position at Winona State from 2018-21.

Prior to Winona State, DiMeco coached at Rutgers from 2014-17 in a variety of roles. His first taste of Division I coaching came at Holy Cross during the 2013 season when he coached the outside linebackers.

DiMeco played linebacker at Norwich University and was a first-team all-conference selection and D-III Pro Day All-American.
