Local roundup: Sussex Academy earns win over Polytech

Sussex Academy used a pair of third-quarter goals to break a scoreless tie before downing Polytech, 3-1, in field hockey on Tuesday afternoon.

The Seahawks (12-3) finished the regular season with a three-game winning streak.

Shelby Manlove, Emma Westbrook and Lilian Manlove all scored goals for Sussex Academy with Madison Leeper adding two assists.

Amiyah Sizer scored for the Panthers, who finish the regular season at 8-6-1.

Smyrna 1, Milford 0: London Bebout’s third-quarter goal lifted the Eagles to the Henlopen North win.

Caroline Davis made three saves for Smyrna (12-3) which held advantages of 4-3 in shots and 7-3 in corners.

Melissa Mesidor had three saves for the Buccaneers.

Delmar 9, Dover 1: Maci Bradford collected three goals and a pair of assists as the Wildcats (15-0) finished the regular season unbeaten.

Baylie Phillips and Josie Hollamon (2 assists) both added two goals for Delmar, which finished with advantages of 23-3 in shots and 8-2 in corners.

The South champion Wildcats next play North champion Cape Henlopen in the Henlopen Conference championship game on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Sussex Academy.

Jewels Goldman scored for the Senators (8-6-1) while Savannah Strauss made nine saves. It was only the third goal that Delmar has allowed this season.

Cape Henlopen 10, Sussex Central 0: Reagan Ciabattoni tallied four of the Vikings’ five first-quarter goals in their Henlopen North victory.

Mackinzie Brown added two goals in the third quarter for Cape, which took 48 shots and 22 corners.

The Golden Knights’ Kianna Kelley made 38 saves.

Boys’ soccer

Middletown 2, Smyrna 1: Nicolas Burris netted a goal in the 53rd minute to break a 1-1 tie and lift the Cavaliers.

Middletown finished with advantages of 8-4 in shots and 5-2 in corner kicks.

Ayomide Gbadebo gave the Eagles an early 1-0 lead while Joseph Scott stopped six shots.

Laurel 3, Seaford 1: The Bulldogs scored two first-half goals before earning the Henlopen South victory.

St. Georges 1, Sussex Academy 0: The Hawks used a second-half goal to edge the Seahawks.

Tyler Hudson made 13 saves for Sussex Academy. St. Georges held edges of 14-4 in shots and 6-2 in corner kicks.

Woodbridge 2, Christiana 1: The Blue Raiders led 1-0 at halftime before posting the victory.

College field hockey

Hens to host Tribe in CAAs: Second-seeded Delaware will face No. 3 William & Mary on Friday at 4 p.m. in the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament semifinals.

Delaware is hosting the four-team tourney at Rullo Stadium. Top-seeded James Madison takes on No. 4 Northeastern on Friday at 1 p.m. in the first semifinal.

The championship game is slated for Sunday at 1 p.m.

The Blue Hens have won the tournament two years in a row and seven times in the last nine seasons.
