Local roundup: Smyrna's Post 14 unbeaten in American Legion baseball

SMYRNA — Smyrna’s Post 14 stayed unbeaten with a 9-1 victory over the Post 10 Generals in American Legion baseball on Tuesday evening.

Winning pitcher Nate Donahue threw a four-hitter with nine strikeouts for Post 14 (5-0), allowing only a seventh-inning run.

Offensively, Dylan Oakley (3-for-4; 3 RBI), Aaron Massey (3-for-3) and J.C. Alley (2-for-4) paced the Smyrna squad,

Post-14 11, Post-28 0: Maximus Mullins allowed only one hit with eight strikeouts in five shutout innings for Post 14.

Jake Macey hit a first-inning grand slam while J.C. Alley and James Tassone had two hits apiece.

Post-14 6, Stahl Post-30 0: Jake Macey pitched a complete-game six-hitter with six strikeouts to earn the shutout for Post 14.

James Tassone went 2-for-4 with Maximus Mullins and Matt Mannering both adding hits.

Post-14 9, Post-10 7: In a game played last week, J.C. Alley went 2-for-3, with a pair of RBI to pace Post 14 to the win.

Nolan Oakley, Chase Pritchett, Jake Macey and James Tassone all pitched for Smyrna in a contest that was stopped by darkness after six innings.

Post-14 11, Post-10 4: J.C. Alley went 4-for-5 in the Smyrna squad’s victory last week.

Also leading Post 14 were James Tassone (2-for-3, 3 RBI), Dylan Oakley (1 hit, 1 RBI) and Aaron Massey (2-for-4).

Matt Decker pitched 3 2/3 innings with Joey Gaston finishing the final 2 1/3 innings in the six-inning game.

Seaford’s Gibson going into ‘Hall’: Former Seaford High standout Derrik Gibson is being inducted into the Eastern Shore Baseball Hall of Fame Museum.

Playing for the Blue Jays from 2005-2008, Gibson made first-team All-State three times, was a two-time selected Gatorade Player of the Year, and was named 2008 Delaware Baseball Coaches Association Player of the Year.

In ‘08, Gibson batted .655 and had a 7-0 pitching record. He was then selected in the second round (77th overall) of the 2008 Major League draft by the Boston Red Sox.

Gibson played six seasons in the Red Sox organization and was named to the all-star team twice. Following his stint with Boston, he played in the Baltimore Orioles and New York Mets organizations, and ended his career in the Colorado Rockies organization in 2018.

Gibson’s career stats include a .253 batting average and 172 stolen bases.
