Local roundup: Smyrna registers volleyball win over Riders

Smyrna High bounced back from a first-set loss to down Caesar Rodney, 3-1, in a Henlopen North volleyball match on Thursday evening.

The Eagles won by scores of 19-25, 25-23, 25-17, 25-19 as they improved to 3-0 in the North, 7-1 overall.

Smyrna was paced by Anna Richardson (20 kills, 9 digs), Karalyn Osborne (4 kills, 3 aces, 11 digs, 36 assists), Gianna Romano (11 kills, 7 digs), Mia Schultz (9 kills) and Carly Timblin (12 digs).

The Riders fell to 1-2 in the North, 5-2 overall.

Sussex Central 3, Cape Henlopen 2: The Golden Knights outlasted the Vikings by scores of 19-25, 25-22, 25-27, 25-19, 18-16 in a marathon North match.

Brenya Reid collected 35 kills and eight aces, Katelyn Evick had 11 kills and Madelynn McTeer finished with 43 assists.

Rileigh Wilson picked up 23 kills for Cape, Kalista Lawson had 12 kills, three aces and 17 digs, Megan Smith totaled 47 assists and Natalie Derrickson added 13 digs.

Delmarva Christian 3, Sussex Academy 0: The Royals improved to 5-2 with the 25-20, 25-8, 25-10 victory.

Elaina Millaway (11 kills, 5 aces, 9 digs), Sierra Troyer (9 kills, 2 aces) and Tessa Kwiatkowski (16 assists) led Delmarva Christian.

Indian River 3, Early College 0: The Indians earned the Henlopen South win by scores of 25-2, 25-2, 25-9.

Delmar 3, Seaford 0: The Wildcats downed the Blue Jays in a Henlopen South match to even their record at 3-3.

Delaware Military 3, First State Military 0: The Seahawks downed the Bulldogs by a score of 25-8, 25-12, 25-6, in a Diamond State match.

Field hockey

Sussex Central 2, Caesar Rodney 1: McKenna Boyle tallied the game-winning goal with 10:46 left in the third quarter as the Golden Knights won their second game in a row.

Bayleigh Perdue scored in the second quarter, on an assist from Perdue, while Kianna Kelley made 12 saves. The Riders finished with advantages of 13-5 in shots and 12-3 in corners.

Peyton Shields tied the contest with a third-quarter goal for CR.

Lake Forest 5, Woodbridge 4: Lacey Hutson and Maya Jester both scored twice in the Spartans’ South win.

Parker Robbins added a second-half goal with Addyson Stewart making five saves. Lake Forest out-shot the Raiders, 16-10.

Woodbridge got goals from Caroline Scott, Payton Keeler and Parker Keeler. Cassie VanBuskirk made nine saves.

Sussex Tech 3, Milford 2: Tori Adams tallied two second-half goals as the Ravens rallied for their fourth win in a row.

Madison Short scored Sussex Tech’s first goal with Bryannah Coral making four saves.

For the Buccaneers, Ellie LoBiando and Erin Dunlap had goals, Olivia Muir assisted both goals and Melissa Mesidor and Eve Sekscinski combined for five saves.

Delmar 12, Indian River 0: Baylie Phillips tallied four goals while Maci Bradford and Jordyn Hollamon (2 assists) had three apiece for the unbeaten Wildcats (7-0).

IR’s Caylee Schmidt made 25 saves in the contest played at DE Turf.

Boys’ soccer

Caesar Rodney 4, Sussex Central 3: Trevor Sullivan’s overtime goal lifted the Riders to the dramatic Henlopen North victory.

CR (3-0 North, 6-0-1 overall) also got goals from Derek Hawkins, Tebar Gomez and Sawyer Ott. Sullivan also had a pair of assists while Kaden Childs made eight saves.

CR held advantages of 16-12 in shots and 6-2 in corner kicks.

Kerry Perez-Perez scored twice for the Golden Knights, who netted a pair of goals in the final 11 minutes of regulation to tie the contest at 3-3. Anthony Prado-Moreno tallied the tying goal.

Dover 2, Polytech 0: Kole Turner and Ian Russum scored goals three minutes apart in the second half to give the Senators to the North win.

Dover finished with edges of 8-6 in shots and 5-1 in corner kicks.

Alexander Szell made six saves for the Panthers.

Sussex Academy 4, Laurel 1: Michael Daniello (one assist) tallied the Seahawks’ first two goals as they improved to 2-0 in the South, 6-0 overall.

Christian Lopez Ramirez and Andree Mendoza-Martinez also scored while Tyler Hudson made four saves. Sussex Academy held advantages of 12-4 in shots and 4-1 in corner kicks.

Mike Gonzalez-Perez scored the Bulldogs’ lone goal in the second half.

Cape Henlopen 6, Smyrna 1: Nicholas Panyko netted three goals for the Vikings in their Henlopen North win.

Aldo Hernandez-Becerra added a goal and three assists for Cape, which led 5-1 at halftime. The Vikings out-shot the Eagles, 17-5.

Daniel Lerro scored for Smyrna with Alex Valle Roman making 10 saves.

Milford 4, Sussex Tech 1: Brandon Zelaya Hernandez netted a pair of second-half goals as the Buccaneers won their third-straight game by the same score of 4-1.

Luke Sollie and Alexander Davis also scored for Milford, which out-shot the Ravens, 16-7, in the North victory.

Luke Bunting scored for Sussex Tech.

Indian River 2, Delmar 0: The Indians netted a goal in each half of their South victory.

Woodbridge 3, Lake Forest 2: The Blue Raiders scored twice in the second half to pick up the South win.

Seaford 9, First State Military 1: Brayan Perez Mendez netted four goals while Isaias Morales Vidaurri had three in the Blue Jays’ win on Wednesday.

The Bulldogs’ Ryan Allen made 21 saves.

College basketball

UD men to play at Temple: The Delaware men’s basketball team finalized its non-conference schedule on Thursday with a road game at Temple.

The Blue Hens will travel to the Liacouras Center in Philadelphia on Nov. 27 at a time TBA. Delaware and the Owls last played each other in 2015.

With the addition of the road game at Temple, Delaware’s home schedule will now consist of 14 games.

College cross country

Hornets’ Albert honored: Delaware State’s Albert Norman was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference’s Men’s Runner of the Week for his record-setting performance at The Shore Cross Country Invitational.

The Sussex Central High gad topped a field of 42 runners with a modern-day school record time of 25-minutes-57 seconds in his opening competition of the season to lead the Hornets to first-place in the team standings in the 8K race.

College golf

UD’s Nieves honored again: Delaware senior Roberto Nieves has been named Colonial Athletic Association Men’s Golfer of the Week for the third time this fall.

Nieves won the individual title at the Wildcat Fall Invitational on Monday and Tuesday by finishing with a six under par 204 on the par 70, 6,572-yard Radnor Valley Country Club Course. Nieves carded rounds of 66 and 67 on Monday, while his 204 score is the second lowest three-round total in program history, a record he already holds.
