Local roundup: Smyrna posts shutout in baseball

Nate Donahue and Caden Daniels combined to pitch a five-inning three-hitter as Smyrna High blanked Mt. Pleasant, 10-0, in a non-conference baseball game on Saturday afternoon.

Donahue struck out four in four innings before Daniels closed out the win with a pair of strikeouts in the fifth.

Logan Unterreiner and Dalton Leager both had a pair of RBI while Connor Ryan drove in another run for Smyrna, which scored four runs in the first inning.

Middletown 8, Indian River 6: The Indians rallied for all six of their runs in the bottom of the sixth before falling short.

Starting pitcher Zak Sophy struck out 10 in four innings for the Cavaliers while Sean Smith had three hits.

Cape Henlopen 8, Laurel 0: Austin Rhue, Michael Jarrell and Ethan Hazzard combined to pitch a one-hitter as the Vikings improved to 3-0.

Josh Reinhold, Hunter Rauch, Nick Cox (2 RBI) and Matt Newcomb (2 RBI) all had two hits for Cape.

Jaden Snyder had the lone hit for Laurel.

St. Mark’s 12, Lake Forest 3: Lake Forest took a 3-2 lead with three runs in the second before St. Mark’s answered by scoring the game’s last 10 runs.

Tristan McCray had two of Lake Forest’s four hits.

Sussex Central 12, Polytech 2: The Golden Knights used a six-run second to take control of the Henlopen North game on Friday.

Chase Boyle went 4-for-4, with two triples and four RBI for Central, which had 13 hits in the contest. Pitcher Cole Rogers went 3.2 innings to earn his first varsity win before freshman Noah Burroughs finished out the win.

Connor Bartlett went 3-for-3 for Polytech.

Softball

Caesar Rodney 6, Appoquinimink 3: The Riders (3-0) scored three runs in the top of the sixth to break a 3-3 tie.

Stacey Deputy homered for CR with Peyton Shields pitching the finals 4.1 innings to earn the victory.

Laurel 10, Padua 0: Kylee Hill pitched a three-hitter with seven strikeouts and only one walk for the Bulldogs.

Ashlyn Ullman went 3-for3 with four RBI, Oliva Rogers homered and had three RBI while Mackenzie Whaley collected two RBI.

Sussex Tech 5, Mt. Pleasant 4: The Ravens scored twice in the top of the fifth to pull out the victory.

Megan Sterling (3 hits, triple), Kayla Evans (2 doubles), and Jaya Shaub (2 hits) sparked Sussex Tech while reliever Kylie Kruger allowed only one runner in five innings to earn the win.

Teagan Bradley struck out 14 for Mount Pleasant.

Delmar 10, Newark Charter 6: Josie Hollamon hit a two-run home run for the Wildcats in the non-conference win.

Autumn Boothe, Amber Cooper, and Ally Marly had two hits each for Delmar.

Red Lion Christian 3, Cape Henlopen 2: Red Lion scored a run in the bottom of the fourth to break a 2-2 tie.

Katie Kuhlman and Marissa Frederick had doubles in the Vikings’ two-run fourth with Frederick also striking out 10.

Caravel 10, Indian River 0: Danielle DeBenedicitis had five RBI for the Buccaneers.

Kinsley Hall and Jillian Collins had hits for the Indians.

St. Elizabeth 19, First State Military 2: Brianna Connelly had a hit, RBI and runs scored for the Bulldogs, who led 2-0 in the first before the Vikings took over.

Boys’ lacrosse

Middletown 16, Polytech 5: The Panthers dropped to 0-2 with the non-conference loss on Friday.

St. Georges 15, Sussex Central 13: The Hawks downed the Golden Knights in a non-conference contest.

St. Andrews 19, First State Military 2: The Bulldogs fell to St. Andrews in the contest on Saturday.

Girls’ lacrosse

Smyrna 7, Appoquinimink 5: The Eagles jumped out to a 4-2 halftime lead before picking up the win on Friday.

Girls’ soccer

Sussex Tech 9, Delmarva Christian 0: Lilly Short (2 assists) tallied three goals with Hannah Murphy (2 assists) and Ashlee Vasquez-Arreaga adding two apiece for the Ravens (3-0), who scored seven first-half goals.

The Royals’ Grace Fiorilla made 10 saves as Sussex Tech out-shot Delmarva Christian, 18-4.

Boys’ volleyball

Conrad 3, Indian River 1: The Indians fell to Conrad by scores 25-20, 16-25, 25-17, 25-21.

College baseball

Hornets drop two: George Washington combined for 27 hits in a 16-1, 8-1 sweep of Delaware State.

Robert Trujillo had two of DSU’s five hits in the opener.

Fordham sweeps Hens: Fordham (11-4) erupted for 23 total runs in a 15-2, 8-1 sweep of Delaware (3-5).

Wesley loses twice: Wesley fell to Neumann in a pair of 7-6 decisions on Saturday. The Wolverines are now 1-5.

College softball

UD splits with Hofstra: Delaware took the opener, 2-1, before dropping the nightcap, 10-6, as the Blue Hens split their CAA-opening doubleheader with Hofstra.

A solo homer by Brooke Glanden (Lake Forest) over the centerfield fence in the sixth gave Delaware (9-2 overall) the win in the opener.

Wesley splits with Macs: Wesley won the opener, 11-3, before falling to Immaculata, 6-0, in the second game of a twinbill.

Kylie Nagle went 3-for-3 in the first game with Amanda Curry scoring twice and adding three RBI.

Women’s soccer

Wesley 5, Gwynedd-Mercy 0: Sophia Ridolfo netted three goals for the Wolverines (3-1) with Megan Shacklock and Amanda Moccaldi scoring the others.

Hofstra 6, Delaware 0: The Blue Hens fell to 0-2 in the CAA, 2-3 overall with the shutout loss.

Men’s lacrosse

Gwynedd-Mercy 16, Wesley 1: Kyle Mackall-Lloyd tallied the lone goal for the Wolverines in the loss.

Women’s lacrosse

Gwynedd-Mercy 21, Wesley 19: Hanna Giaccone scored five goals with Margaret Johnson and Kassie Dieter adding four apiece for the Wolverines in the loss.
