Local roundup: Smyrna girls top Milford in lacrosse opener

Smyrna High netted nine goals in each half in posting an 18-5 win over Milford in Henlopen Conference girls’ lacrosse on a rainy Wednesday afternoon.

Madison Fillo (1 assist) tallied four goals for the Eagles with Madison Graham (3 assists) and Megan Keller (1 assist) both adding three. Nine Smyrna players scored goals.

Hannah Zimmerman, an eighth-grader, scored three goals for the Buccaneers (1-1), who are in their first season as a varsity program.

Dover 11, Caesar Rodney 6: Superia Clark and Kyleigh Dill (1 assist) netted five goals apiece for the Senators in their season opener.

Ashtyn Torbert added Dover’s other goal while Regan Torbert made seven saves. Dover led 8-1 at halftime.

Boys’ lacrosse

Caesar Rodney 8, Dover 3: With the contest tied 3-3 after the first quarter, the Riders tallied the game’s final five goals in the Henlopen North win.

Senior Ryan Carey collected three goals and three assists for CR. Patrick Craig and Ethan Reid (1 assist) both scored twice with Steven Grossman (1 assist) adding the other goal.

Riders goalie Jakob Buxton made 11 saves.

Sussex Academy 10, Lake Forest 6: The Seahawks opened the season with a Henlopen South victory.

Brandon Tice (1 assist) scored four goals for the Spartans, Cael Moyer had two and Caleb Secrist made 12 saves.

Cape Henlopen 23, Polytech 1: The Vikings picked up the Henlopen North win at DE Turf.

Girls’ soccer

Milford 5, Delmarva Christian 1: The Buccaneers led 2-0 at halftime before improving to 2-0.

Archmere 9, First State Military 0: The Auks netted seven first-half goals in the Diamond State Conference win.

Smyrna 6, Indian River 3: Freshman Desiree Zapata (2 assists) and junior Kelly Barr tallied three goals apiece to pace the Eagles to the win on Tuesday night.

Smyrna out-scored IR, 3-1, in the second half to close out the victory.

Isabella Binko had two goals and an assist for the Indians with Anastasia Diakos adding the other goal.

Boys’ volleyball

Indian River 3, St. Mark’s 0: The Indians opened the season with a 25-22, 25-20, 25-19 win over the Spartans.

College lacrosse

WOMEN, Delaware State 22, Wilmington U. 13: The Hornets set team records for goals in a game and a half (14) to earn its first victory of the season on Tuesday.

The previous records were 18 goals in a game and 11 in a half vs. Howard last spring. The nine-goal win also tied the Howard contest for the Hornets’ largest margin of victory in its nine-year history.

Gwenna Gentle and Rosella Nardi scored a team-high six goals each to tie the school record for single-game scoring first set by Emily Etkins in 2015. DSU’s Nina Dillard also set a career-high with four goals.

Gentle leads the Hornets (1-4) in scoring this season with 12 goals, while Nardi has moved into second.

College volleyball

Delaware 3, Hofstra 0: Freshman Claire Flood made her first career start and appearance by putting home 14 kills as the Blue Hens swept the Pride, 28-26, 26-24, 25-22, in a CAA match.

The Hens put three attackers in double figures as sophomores Adelina Rivera and Lauryn Richardson each had 10 kills to join Flood.

Savannah Seemans collected 17 digs to go along with eight kills.
