Local roundup: Senators rally but fall to Arundel 28-27 in OT

Dover High rallied from a 14-point deficit before falling to Arundel, 28-27, in overtime in its football season opener on Friday night.

The Wildcats won the contest when they threw a touchdown pass on a fourth-and-10 play and then ran for the deciding two-point conversion.

The game went into overtime tied at 20-20. The Senators, who had trailed 14-0, scored and kicked the PAT to go up 27-20.

Arundel tied the game on a TD with about two minutes left in regulation but Dover blocked the extra point try to keep the score knotted.

Dover was making its debut under Chip Knapp, the former Wesley College coach.

Laurel 41, Sussex Tech 8: The Bulldogs opened the season by pulling away for the win over the Ravens.

Javier White scored three of Laurel’s touchdowns, including a pair of scoring receptions. The Bulldogs led 14-8 at halftime before scoring 27 unanswered second-half points.

College field hockey

Delaware 2, American 0: The No. 17-ranked Blue Hens improved to 2-1 with the victory at home on Friday night.

Delaware got goals from Femke Strien and Grace Hoepfner as well as an assist from Ashlyn Carr (Delmar).

American out-shot the Hens, 12-10, and held a 9-6 edge in corners. Goalie Lizzie Gaebel tallied seven saves in the win.

College volleyball

Delaware 3, NJIT 0: The Blue Hens (3-1) kicked off the Delaware Invitational by sweeping NJIT, 25-11, 25-15, 25-18, on Friday afternoon.

Lani Mason led the Delaware attack with a match-best 12 kills to pair with four digs. Kirah Johnson wrapped up the match against the Highlanders (1-1) with eight kills on a .412 attack percentage to go along with three blocks.

Ezgi Basaranlar posted 23 assists, while Lily Rogers added seven off the bench. Defensively, Katie Turner posted a match-best 15 digs.

College athletics

UD sets rules for fans: The University of Delaware announced on Friday that all campus visitors must provide proof of full vaccination or a negative PCR coronavirus test taken within 72 hours of the event.

The rule goes into effect on Sept. 10. Delaware hosts St. Francis in football on Sept. 11.
