Local Roundup: Senators open season with win over Riders

Dover High scored seven runs in the second inning en route to an 11-8 victory over Caesar Rodney on the opening day of the Henlopen Conference baseball season.

The Senators, who have won five out of the last six games in the rivalry, added two runs in the fourth and seventh to close out the victory. Three Dover pitchers combined on a two-hitter.

Brandon Yoder (4 RBI), Hunter Chambers (2 runs) and Alec Rodriguez (2 RBI, 3 runs) had two hits apiece for the Senators while Leondre Brittingham drove in three runs.

David Dill hit a two-run homer for the Riders, who scored five runs in the fourth.

Sussex Central 5, Smyrna 2: The Golden Knights scored three runs in the second inning before picking up the North win.

The Eagles scored twice in the top of the fifth to close within one but Central answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Colin Tucker (3 RBI) and Reif Steen each contributed two hits while Chase Boyle and Brendan Anderson combined to pitch a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts.

Catcher Logan Unterreiner had Smyrna’s only hit.

Cape Henlopen 13, Milford 2: Winning pitcher Josh Reinhold went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI while striking out nine in 4 2/3 innings for the Vikings.

Hunter Rauch also had three hits and scored three runs for Cape, which opened up a 10-0 lead after scoring five runs in the third.

Ryan Zimmerman hit a solo homerun for the Buccaneers.

Delmar 10, Lake Forest 10: The Spartans erupted for nine runs in the bottom of the sixth but still needed a run in the seventh before the game was suspended by darkness.

The Wildcats scored four runs in the top of the seventh to take a 10-9 lead. The two squads combined for 20 runs, 16 hits and 10 errors.

Sussex Tech 10, Polytech 0: Winning pitcher Cody Dimes gave up only two hits and struck out five in four innings for the Ravens.

Dimes also went 3-for-3 while Jaryn Sample added two hits for Sussex Tech, which took control with a six-run second.

Alexander Newman doubled for the Panthers.

Indian River 11, Laurel 0: Tyler Bowen and Josh Townsend combined to pitch a five-inning no-hitter for the Indians.

Roman Keith’s two-run double sparked a nine-run fourth for IR, which had 15 hits in the contest.

Caravel 11, Delmarva Christian 4: The game was scoreless until the Buccaneers scored six runs in the fifth and five more in the sixth.

Riley Culver pitched four shutout innings and hits a two-run triple for the Royals.

Girls’ soccer

Lake Forest 1, Caesar Rodney 0: Sierra Jester netted the game’s only goal in the 31st minute as the Spartans upended the Riders in their season opener.

It was believed to be Lake Forest’s first win ever over CR in girls’ soccer.

Freshman goalie Kyra Moyer made eight saves as the Spartans made the goal stand up in the debut of head coach Andrew West. Lake Forest, which has only two seniors on this year’s roster, was out-shot, 25-7.

“Our defense did an amazing job at holding them off,” said Jester. “Kyra Moyer did an amazing job. She had multiple one-on-ones that she stopped.

“It was crazy,” she said about the celebration after the win. “Everybody was coming out on the field yelling. Everyone’s so excited, It was a very big accomplishment.”

On her goal, Jester took a pass from Haydan Parker and booted a high shot that just went in under the crossbar.

Dover 9, Seaford 0: The Senators opened the season with a shutout victory.

Sussex Academy 3, Cape Henlopen 2: Katherine Portillo netted the Seahawks’ last two goals in the iwn.

Tayler Flaherty scored Sussex Academy’s first goal with Emma Westbrook making seven saves.

Cape got second-half goals from Giselle Garacia and Lily Ashby while Julie Heffernan made nine saves.

Laurel 4, Sussex Central 3: The Bulldogs edged the Golden Knights in overtime in a contest that was tied 2-2 at halftime.

Sussex Tech 5, Delmar 1: Lilly Short netted three goals with Hannah Murphy scoring the other two to pace the Ravens.

Alexandra Johnson made five saves for Sussex Tech, which held advantages of 12-6 in shots and 3-2 in corner kicks.

Maci Bradford tallied a second-half goals for the wildcats with Kelly Davis stopping eight shots.

Softball

Smyrna 2, Sussex Central 1: Payton Dixon pitched a three-hitter with 10 strikeouts as the Eagles edged the Golden Knights in extra innings.

Central freshman Madge Layfield tossed a seven-hitter while striking out 20 in her high school debut for the Knights.

Smyrna took a 1-0 lead with a run in the first and Central tied it with a run in the bottom of the sixth.

Caesar Rodney 4, Dover 3: Rachel McCleary bunted home Stacey Deputy (double) in the bottom of the fifth as the Riders edged the Senators.

Winning pitcher Peyton Shields threw a five-hitter with 13 strikeouts while Lyric Abdul-Rasheed had an RBI triple for CR.

Emma Crowe hit a two-run triple in the top of the fifth to give the Senators a 3-2 lead with pitcher Alexis Dowdy striking out seven.

Cape Henlopen 5, Milford 0: Marissa Frederick pitched a one-hitter with 12 strikeouts for the vikings.

Cape, which scored three in the fifth, got hits from Katie Kuhlman, Jay’Lyn Slater, Frederick and Gracie Whisenhunt.

Haleigh Baker had Milford’s only hit while pitcher Khyliah Reynolds struck out seven.

Sussex Tech 15, Polytech 3: With the Panthers leading 3-0, the Ravens broke the game open with 14 runs in the third.

Sussex Tech’s eight-hit attack was led by Journey Hopkins (3 RBI), Laniya Lewis (homer, 2 RBI, 3 runs), Kayla Evans (homer, 3 RBI), Megan Sterling (2 hits, 2 RBI) and Jaya Shaub (double).

Karis Minner had three of Polytech’s seven hits with Jumaria Sample adding a double.

Lake Forest 3, Delmar 1: The Spartans scored twice in the bottom of the third to break a 1-1 tie.

Ja’lyne Bailey pitched a four-hitter with five strikeouts while Lexi Stahre, Jess Reed, Bailey and Karly Cain all had hits.

Camryn Wingate had two of Delmar’s hits while pitcher Ashlyn Tapman also tossed a four-hitter.

Sussex Academy 5, Seaford 4: Erin Carey homered for the Seahawks, who scored three in the bottom of the sixth to pull out the South win.

Sage Larimore had a homer for the Blue Jays.

Girls’ lacrosse

Cape Henlopen 18, Polytech 5: Ella Rishko netted five goals with Kelly Bragg adding four in the Vikings’ Henlopen North win.

Seven players scored for Cape, which led 14-2 at halftime. The Vikings out-shot Polytech, 24-6.

Claire Fuchs had two of the Panthers’ goals with Adelyn Mollohan making six saves.

Boys’ lacrosse

St. Georges 17, First State Military 8: Brycen Whitehouse and Christopher Allen netted four goals apiece for the Bulldogs in the loss.

College field hockey

Hens’ Strien honored: Delaware senior Femke Strien was named Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week for the second consecutive week.

Strien totaled six points on two goals and two assists in back-to-back victories for the Blue Hens last week. Strien leads the CAA in points (nine) and points per game (3.00) and is tied atop the league in goals (three).

College lacrosse

UD’s Acchione wins another award: For the second consecutive week, Delaware freshman Cam Acchione was named CAA Rookie of the Week in men’s lacrosse.

The Barrie, Ontario native netted three goals in the Blue Hens’ 13-12 overtime victory over Towson on Saturday. With Delaware trailing 12-9 and less than six minutes left in regulation, Acchione scored back-to-back goals.
