Local roundup: Rigby paces Riders past Archmere

Andrew Rigby allowed just one hit and struck out seven in six and a third innings as Caesar Rodney High downed Archmere, 10-2, in baseball on Wednesday afternoon.

The contest was tied 1-1 before the Riders put up four runs in the fifth inning and five more in the sixth.

At the plate, Rigby reached base all three times with a pair of doubles and two RBI. Tate Wisniewski and Colson Bennett contributed two hits apiece to CR’s total of nine hits in the contest.

Milford 1, Polytech 0: Aydin Zimmerman tossed a four-hitter with five strikeouts in earning the Henlopen North shutout for the Buccaneers.

Milford picked up the game’s only run in the second when Zimmerman tripled and scored on Shawn Saxon’s sac fly.

Connor Bartlett and Ocean Johnson combined to pitch a four-hitter for the Panthers.

Laurel 3, Dover 0: The Bulldogs raised their record to 8-7 with the shutout victory.

Woodbridge 9, Delmarva Christian 0: Winning pitcher Seth Smart struck out 15 in six and 2/3 innings in the Blue Raiders’ shutout victory.

Christian Quinones (3-for-4, double, 3 RBI), Cooper Andrews (2 hits), Lextyn Wescott (2 RBI) and Logan Moran (2 RBI) paced Woodbridge’s nine-hit attack.

Royals’ reliever Kasey Bell struck out seven and allowed only one run in 4 and 2/3 innings with Chet Furmanek hitting a double.

Boys’ lacrosse

Sussex Academy 15, Lake Forest 4: The Henlopen South champion Seahawks (12-3) finished the regular season with a five-game winning streak.

Sussex Academy will host North champion Cape Henlopen on Friday at 5 p.m. in North-South championship game.

Polytech 8, Middletown 6: The Panthers finished with a record of 7-8 after posting the win.

Caravel 12, Smyrna 11: The Eagles fell to 5-8 with the loss.

Delaware Military 20, First State Military 1: Brycen Whitehouse netted the lone goal while Braden Shoupe made six saves for the Bulldogs (9-5).

Girls’ lacrosse

Archmere 17, Polytech 10: Elizabeth Szell tallied six goals for the No. 11 Panthers in their loss to the sixth-seeded Auks in the first round of the DIAA state tournament.

Molly Kenney added two goals with Adelyn Mollohan making six saves for Polytech (8-8), which was playing in the tourney for the 10th straight season.

Archmere (13-3) out-scored the Panthers, 10-5, in the second half to put the game out of reach.

The Auks next play at No. 3 Tatnall (13-2) on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Girls’ soccer

Sussex Tech 5, Cape Henlopen 1: Lilly Short netted four goals for the Ravens in the Henlopen North victory.

Ebony Wilson made four saves for Sussex Tech, which outshot the Vikings, 9-6.
Josephine Ingerski scored for Cape, which got four saves from Brianna Burrell.

Sussex Central 7, Woodbridge 0: The Golden Knights blanked the Blue Raiders in their regular-season finale.

Sussex Academy 7, Laurel 0: The Seahawks scored four first-half goals en route to the win.

Sanford 2, Delmar 0: The Wildcats (8-6) had a three-game winning streak snapped.

Red Lion 7, First State Military 0: The Lions handed the Bulldogs a shutout loss.

College football

Blue Hens ranked 15th: The Delaware football team has been ranked No. 15 in the HERO Sports Preseason Top 25 FCS poll.

The Blue Hens are one of three CAA squads to make the poll. Villanova is No. 9 while Richmond tied for the 25th spot.

Delaware, which went 5-6 in the fall season, is beginning its first season under new head coach Ryan Carty. Defending national champion North Dakota State is No. 1 in the poll.
