Local roundup: Polytech girls top Smyrna for seventh win in a row

Polytech High shook off a two-point halftime deficit to down Smyrna, 53-48, in Henlopen North girls’ basketball on Tuesday night.

The victory was the seventh in a row for the Panthers (10-2 North, 13-4 overall) while snapping a five-game winning streak for the Eagles (8-3 North, 11-5 overall).

Senior Kallie Hopkins (19 points, 13 rebounds) posted her 17th straight double-double while Sierra Henry (16 points, 8 rebounds, 4 steals) and Sky Naranjo (9 points, 10 rebounds) also led Polytech.

Kai Burnette and Jayde Rivera both had 13 points for the Eagles.

Cape Henlopen 67, Sussex Central 20: Freshman Amalia Frutchman (10 rebounds) and sophomore Faith Re netted 20 points apiece as the Vikings stayed unbeaten in the North.

Mya Maull (8 rebounds, 5 steals) added 11 points for Cape Henlopen, which led 37-12 at halftime.

Diamond Sample had eight points to lead the Golden Knights.

Woodbridge 74, Lake Forest 26: The Blue Raiders started the Henlopen South contest on a 23-6 run to take control.

Reghan Robinson (19 points, 4 assists), Payton Keeler (17 points, 8 rebounds), De’Asya Jones (13 points, 10 rebounds, 6 steals, 5 assists), Iyanna Mims (12 points, 5 steals) and Tianna Neal (11 points, 8 rebounds) all scored in double figures.

Kirja Hickman had a team-high nine points for the Spartans.

Laurel 57, Delmar 56: Bailey Ullman’s basket with just 2.2 seconds left lifted the Bulldogs to the South victory.

Senior Carlie Venables scored a game-high 27 points, including the 1,000th of her career, while sinking five three-pointers for Laurel. Z’Monnie Farlow added 17.

St. Peter & Paul 33, Delmarva Christian 32: The Royals dropped to 15-1 after suffering thier first loss of the season.

Boys’ basketball

Seaford 109, Sussex Academy 29: The Blue Jays put up 39 points in the first quarter and 38 more in the third before breaking the century mark.

Zion Mifflin and Makel Hubbard tallied 20 points each, Kashmier Wise had 19, Brent Ricketts scored 13 and Aizyon Matthews added 10.

Tyrese Mims had 13 points for the Seahawks.

Polytech 68, Smyrna 51: The Panthers overcame an early four-point deficit to earn the North win and clinch the division title.

Dorell Little netted a game-high 23 points with Kyle Gamber and Jalen Anderson contributing 10 points earch.

Daniel Lerro had 13 points for the Eagles with Obinna Coleman adding 11.

Cape Henlopen 53, Sussex Central 45: The Vikings (11-5) picked up their second Henlopen North win in a row.

Tower Hill 52, Caesar Rodney 33: The DIAA defending state champion Hillers limited the Riders to only 21 points through the first three quarters before picking up the victory.

Khalil Kemp scored 10 points for CR.

Indian River 65, Early College 45: The Indians built a 29-17 halftime advantage before earning the South win.

IR got 25 points from Brendon Bradford, who hit six of the Indians’ 12 three-pointers. Jamaal Jones added 11 points.

Woodbridge 55, Lake Forest 53: The Blue Raiders edged the Spartans on Monday night in a Henlopen South contest that was close throughout.

Bruce Mosley (14) and Malachi Hayes (13) paced Woodbridge.

Darius Miller (16), Jaabir Robinson (14) and Calif Spencer (11) all reached double figures for Lake Forest.

Delmarva Christian 68, Holly Grove Christian 19: The Royals improved to 12-5 with the victory.

College basketball

MEN, Delaware State 66, Chicago State 60: The Hornets out-scored Chicago State, 36-27, in the second half before posting their fourth win in the last five games.

Martaz Robinson and O’Koye Parker netted 16 points apiece for Delaware State (5-17) with Corey Perkins adding 12 points and six assists.
