Local roundup: Milford toasts homecoming with 14-7 win over Red Lion

Milford High posted a 14-7 victory over Red Lion Christian in football on the Buccaneers’ Homecoming on Friday night.

The two programs are both member of the newly-created Class 2A, District III this season.

After having last week’s game with Delmar postponed and losing the previous week to Lake Forest, Milford (1-1 Dist. III, 3-1 overall) hadn’t won a game since Sept. 10.

Laurel 56, Polytech 14: The Class 3A Bulldogs posted their third win over a Class 2A this fall and improved to 4-0 with the win.

It marked the third time Laurel has scored at least 41 points this season.

Indian River 35, Seaford 6: The Indians, who had a game postponed last week, improved to 2-1 after picking up the Class 3A, District III win on Friday.

Field hockey

Dover 3, Polytech 2: The Senators got goals from Ellisyn Arthur, Joslin Cain and Superia Clark is posting the Henlopen North victory on Thursday night.

Greily Fuentes-Vasquez added two assists with Savannah Strauss making a pair of assists for the Senators, who led 3-1 going into the fourth quarter.

The Panthers’ goals came from Rachel Carey and Kylee LaVere. Raegan Thomas made five saves.

Cape Henlopen 4, Smyrna 1: The unbeaten Vikings (6-0) scored a goal in each quarter to pick up the North win on Thursday.

Reagan Ciabattoni (1 assist) tallied Cape’s first and last goals with Emma Duffield and Noelle Sabbagh adding the others.

Morgan Newcomb had three saves as the Vikings finished with advantages of 19-7 in shots and 10-4 in corners.

London Bebout scored for Smyrna, which got 10 saves from Halle Geiger.

Sussex Academy 5, Laurel 0: Addison Basile tallied a pair of goals in the Seahawks’ South win on Thursday.

Macy Steinwedel, Madison Leeper and Emma Lehman also scored for Sussex Academy.

College field hockey

Delaware 4, St. Joseph’s 3, OT: No. 23 Delaware upset No. 9 Saint Joseph’s as Julia Duffhuis and Kiki Oudshoorn as they both netted two goals apiece.

College golf

DSU ranked No. 153: The Delaware State women’s golf team reached an all-time program high in the latest ranking of collegiate women’s golf teams, climbing to 153 in the new Golfweek poll.

DSU was ranked 228 last year and as high as 248 during the 2018-19 season.

In the last six months, the Hornets captured the Navy Invitational championship, took second place in the PGA WORKS Minority Collegiate Team Championship and opened the 2021-22 season with a good showing at the William & Mary Invitational.
