Local roundup: DSU volleyball team nips Howard in regular season finale

The Delaware State volleyball team wrapped up its most successful regular season in more than a decade on a high note, coming from behind to defeat Howard, 3-2, in a MEAC North contest on Sunday afternoon.

The Hornets dropped the first two sets before storming back to take the last three and win their fourth match in a row.

DSU ends the regular year with an 11-4 overall record (.733), its best win percentage since posting a 23-6 mark (.793) in the early years of the program in 1987. The Hornets’ 7-3 MEAC record this season is also the team’s best since posting back-to-back 8-2 conference marks in 2009 & 2010.

The Hornets will return to action at the MEAC Tournament next weekend in Norfolk, Va. DSU will be the No. 2 North seed in the tourney.

On Sunday, Howard won the first two sets, 25-20 and 30-28. But Delaware State reeled off win in the final three sets, 25-10, 25-21, 15-3.

The Hornets swept four matches against Howard this season.

College baseball

George Washington 8, Delaware State 2: The Colonials finished off a three-game weekend sweep, out-scoring the Hornets, 32-4 in the series.

Delaware State (4-10) had nine hits in Sunday’s game, including two apiece from Trey Paige and Krew Bouldin.

Football

Wesley game postponed: Wesley College’s football game at Christopher Newport, scheduled for Sunday, has been postponed until Friday at 6 p.m.

According to Christopher Newport’s website, the contest was postponed “due to transportation difficulties experienced by the Wesley team as well as expected severe weather forecast for the Hampton Roads area.”

Besides Friday’s game, the Wolverines have one last game, at home against Stevenson on April 9 at 7 p.m.

Equestrian

Hornets fall in ECACs: No. 1 seed SMU defeated No. 4 seed Delaware State in the ECAC Championship semifinal round on Friday in Martin, Tenn.

The Mustangs (8-1, 4-0 ECAC) started the day tying points with the Hornets (3-4, 1-2 ECAC) in Fences. SMU followed its Fences performance with a sweep in Horsemanship.

Delaware State earned a 2-0 win in Flat to start the second half after Madigan Eppink and Miranda Seade tied their points with scores of 134 and 150, respectively.

It all came down to Reining as SMU held a 6-4 lead heading into the final event. The Hornets won the first two points of the event to tie it up at 6-6.

But the Mustangs won the final two points to secure the victory.

Women’s soccer

Drexel 10, Delaware State 1: Delaney Lappin came off the bench to score three goals and lead Drexel past the Hornets.

Seven players scored at least once for the Dragons (3-2). DelState finishes the spring season 0-6.

Jada Lee scored Delaware State’s lone goal, her first of the season, in the 77th minute.

Delaware State was out-shot 21-8 in the match. Ashley Maribo was credited with five saves for the Hornets.
