Local roundup: CR wins fifth in a row, Polytech also posts victory in girls' lacrosse

Caesar Rodney High built a three-goal halftime lead before registering an 11-8 win over Wilmington Charter in girls’ lacrosse on Wednesday afternoon.

The Riders (11-4) finished the regular season on a five-game winning streak.

Freshman Elle Roberts tallied four goals and two assists while Melissa Dolt made 16 saves for CR, which was out-shot, 19-18. Lyndsey Weller and Lauren Wark both added two goals and an assist.

Sussex Academy 23, Milford 3: Shelby Manlove netted four goals and four assists for the Seahawks (13-1), who got goals from 13 players.

Hannah Zimmerman scored for the Buccaneers with Madison Stahl making six saves.

Polytech 20, Indian River 7: Elizabeth Szell tallied six goals and an assist in the Panthers’ victory.

Polytech, which outscored IR, 11-2, in the second half, also got three goals each from Molly Kenney (2 assists) and Amelia Payus.

Kylie Harris netted five goals for the Indians.

Lake Forest 13, Sussex Tech 3: Emma Massey netted eight goals, including her 100th, as the Spartans closed the regular season with a record of 8-7.

Baseball

Sussex Central 8, Delmar 2: The Golden Knights scored eight runs over their final three at-bats to rally from a 2-0 deficit.

Brendan Anderson allowed only five hits and struck out 10 in six innings while Jaxon Steen had a two-run single in the sixth.

Kyler Shepherd had two RBI for the Wildcats.

Caesar Rodney 18, Mt. Pleasant 1: Alex Bauer and Brock Conner both had two hits and three RBI for the Riders.

Cam Lawson gave up only one hit over the first three innings to earn the win.

Delcastle 6, First State Military 3: The Cougars scored three runs in the sixth to snap a 3-3 tie.

Steven Bright struck out six and added a pair of hits for the Bulldogs.

Milford 13, Seaford 3: Winning pitcher Reid Lofland threw a complete game, allowing only one earned run and striking out five for the Buccaneers.

Ryan Mejia had three hits and a pair of RBI for Milford, which was leading 4-2 before scoring six runs in the sixth.

The Blue Jays’ Sean Martinez and Jude Dean had two hits apiece.

Softball

Lake Forest 6, Sussex Tech 4: The Spartans scored three runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh to pull out the win.

Smyrna 7, Dover 4: Meghan Shirey and Hailey McCutchan each had two hits ad a pair of RBI for the Eagles.

Makayla Brantley scored three runs for Smyrna, which built a 6-1 lead with two runs in the top of the fourth.

Laurel 5, William Penn 4: The Bulldogs edged the Colonials to improve to 11-5.

Woodbridge 21, Glasgow 0: Parker Keeler pitched a two-hitter with 14 strikeouts for the Blue Raiders.

Keeler also went 3-for-3 with a triple, a pair of doubles, three runs and five RBI. Caroline Scott (3-for-3, 2 doubles), Hannah Jefferson (3 RBI, 2 runs), Payton Keeler (3 RBI, 2 runs) and Laura Tatman (4 runs) also led Woodbridge.

Dover 21, Early College 1: The Senators rolled to the win over the Hornets.

Sussex Central 13, Red Lion 8: Mya Jones hit two of the Golden Knights’ four home runs in the win on Tuesday night.

Kate Evick and McKenna Boyle also homered for Central, which scored six runs in the top of the sixth to open up a 13-6 lead.

Polytech 4, Seaford 0: Julia MacConnell (3-for-3, triple, double, 2 RBI) paced the Panthers while Mara Everton pitched a four-hitter with seven strikeouts.

Woodbridge 10, Odessa 6: Kameron Spence had three hits and scored three times with winning pitcher Emily Peterson striking out nine.

Indian River 9, Dover 1: The Indians improved to 12-4 with the victory.

Boys’ volleyball

Indian River 3, Mt. Pleasant 0: The Indians won the first-round playoff games by scores of 25-13, 25-8, 25-20.

Boys’ lacrosse

Sussex Academy 13, Smyrna 12: The Seahawks raised their record to 9-3 after winning for the fourth time in the last five games.

Caravel 18, Sussex Tech 2: The Buccaneers posted a non-conference win over the Ravens.

Girls’ soccer

Delmarva Christian 9, Seaford 2: The Royals took a 7-1 halftime lead before picking up the victory.

College baseball

Delaware 6, Penn 5: Joey Loynd hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth and Bryce Greenly (Milford) recorded a game-ending strikeout with the bases loaded in the ninth.

Loynd recorded a triple and a homer while driving in four run for the Blue Hens (23-22).

College softball

Hens pick up all-CAA awards: Delaware’s Hanna Garber was named the CAA Defensive Player of the Year and coach Jen Steele was selected as the Coach of the Year as the league announced its year-end awards.

The Blue Hens had a league-high five players selected to all-conference teams.

Garber was named to the All-CAA first team for the second-straight year, while Brittney Mendoza and Emily Winburn each received their first selections to the first team. Julz Garber and Graceyn Frost both earned nods to the All-CAA second team and Frost was also named to the All-CAA Rookie Team.
